Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

To our CIO with the initials AM - what does your 3rd floor group really do

I am not sure what this CIO is thinking when large groups of key personnel supporting various critical applications and high-value projects are cut. But a small group consisting of all level 8 and above with no application ownership, who seem to be browsing the web all the time (or just gone) gets to stay on with no cuts whatsoever. Nobody really knows what they do, but they have lots of cool toys that most techies would jump at the chance to work on (if they don't do it already).

Yes - I am just jealous. I would rather apply my skills in autonomous vehicles towards whatever pet project AM has these guys doing instead of being laid off and wondering what to do next, but it is really nice to not have to worry about that next project.

it is crazier if you do know what they're working on.

A bunch of IT guuys from Dell gave themselves fancy titles and spent 6 months taking online courses about autonomous driving. At work. On GM's dime..... They don't work for or even support an autonomous team. They call themselves researchers but have no research background.... I could go on but it is all just too depresing.

So you have zero idea what these people are working on but your sure it is adding zero value. Pleeeeeeeeease! No wonder you have been let go. Every time I asked that team for help they came through.

Less than 5% layoffs in this org is misinformation. Many NCHs and those recently promoted left before ISP, which is actually better for GM than those that get severance. Suffice it to say, the 30% salary reduction that was rumored was indirectly met by the threat of ISP. Studies indicate that voluntary employee exodus is about 1:1 with involuntary layoffs. As for anyone whose job you dont understand the details of, how are you qualified to make a judgement? You should be updating your resume instead of complaining about the decisions made by management. They would have been unpopular no matter the outcome, given the mandate that came from the top of the food chain. Watch The Office s6.03.

Also there is a lot of bloat in this CIOs org , very few projects and too many people to work on them. And this CIOs org had little to no impact with these layoffs, like not even 5%cut .

As much as you all may resent them. They pulled quite a heist working their way up to high level positions and blowing through GM money without any real repercussions. You have to at least give them credit

The future of manufacturing is looking bleak after these layoffs. But anyways those critical apps are all old so does it really matter? On the bright side we have cool research projects! - AM

Why don’t you just ask? I’m sure your antisocial behavior had nothing to do with getting let go..

I can't tell you. Classified and you don't have the clearance.

90% of "researchers" are not really doing any researching but management, pretty much only the short term contractors are the one doing any work.

STFU We were better off before IT was GM and not outsourced.

You as a group are the most overrated overly paid individuals.

Engineers built this company, you're here to support them, so don't f---ing think they're useless just because you don't know what they do.

My team calls them the 3rd floor clowns. I mean seriously: "ODB2 Research Scientist" ?!?!? That is like saying HTML 3.2 Research Scientist or RS232 Fellow. My drone hobby group would fly circles around these guys.
