I knew an engineer who was "laid off" due to too many engineers years ago. However, when he applied for other jobs later and called HR to find out what was going on, he was told he and the 100 others had been fired that day. Apparently, the director checked the wrong box and she had left the company, so HR was not willing to contact her to correct the mistake. He was told he could never work for GM again, so lets hope our directors check the right box and we are truly laid off and not fired!

Laid off workers or displaced workers are workers who have lost or left their jobs because their employer has closed or moved, there was insufficient work for them to do, or their position or shift was abolished (Borbely, 2011). Downsizing in a company is defined to involve the reduction of employees in a workforce.

Next time, could you post something that is both useful AND correct??

"Position was eliminated during company restructuring" for your resume.

Severanced. Tie is broken. That's what it is.

You lack understanding of the context. Laid off is from downsizing, restructuring. Fired is for things related to not doing your job correctly, well, coming in drunk, etc. Furloughed is temporary leave knowing you'll come back. Sounds like you're new to the English language anyhow, using excessive exclamation marks in inappropriate places.

Not worth debating. I was laid off on Tuesday. What's done is done. I agree with your last sentence. As far as I'm concerned, GM's future vision lacks common sense and I'm happy to start the next chapter of my career.

Severance package... can qualify for unemployment... due to "reduction of force" and "restructuring"... thats a layoff. When you get fired, you don't get a severance package.

Oh and saying "laid off" to a future employer during an interview sounds a hell of a lot better than "terminated".
