You can also have fun. Not sure if it's just my experience, but seems corporate is just too serious and unemotional. I get the professional aspects about it, but to me, professional doesn't mean cutting off your emotions for 8-9 hours a day. Just the office environment (not just GM) seems so depressing and sad because there's some sort of unwritten code about behavior. Total show stopper for me and the reason I left 5 years back. Feel bottled up and it's not healthy (for me). Let me know your take...

I'm with OP. My GM experience can best be described as "numbing". Even before the firings, I noticed how miserable most employees were and that showed in how they treated each other. I didn't expect a hug-fest environment, but also didn't expect the Hunger Games.
If you have been let go, take some time to really think about what you want to do next. Yes, if you choose to opt out of corporate America, you can expect a much lower salary. But ask yourself what is your quality of life worth? I can honestly say that my quality of life was horrible when at GM and, while I was grateful to have had a job for a number of years, there hasn't been a single day that I miss it.
Same!! Got canned and honestly glad. I have this free feeling. Like I can start over. I might start surfing too... haha
