If you are going into any field type technical job, the TAC is the best place to start because in 2-3 years you will learn more than you would in 10 plus years in a regular job. You drink from the proverbial fire hose every day. Not for the faint of heart I will assure you.

speaking from personal interaction, the BGL TAC and consulting is staffed with lot of freshers, infact its looked upon as a temporary gig before moving on to higher studies or other jobs.
their age profile and interests are distinctly and visibly different from the dev,test teams - which fit the usual mold of slightly overweight, tired and angry :)
perhaps the veterans are long gone. these days all they do is create a BU escalation, setup a webex call for anything remotely complex. BU managers are happy to whip whichever hapless engrs they decide to torture for that week.
I don't know about it being a paradise for managers but the conditions you describe are how every TAC in every country and every company I have ever worked for have been.
It is true however that Cisco TAC managers, at least those in RTP, did on occasion go above and beyond the call of duty in being royal A-holes.
