Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Another sleepless night

Am I the only one who is here in the middle of the night, not able to sleep and worrying about what's to come tomorrow? We might have been granted a short reprieve, but we all know this is far from over.

I'm just wondering how I'm going to function throughout this and next week with barely any sleep...

This is a totally natural physiological and psychological response to threat. Your job is often a part of your core identity, and to be separated from it threatens your sense of self. And the worry of not knowing who, what, where, and when stimulates the fight, flight, or freeze responses. Completely natural and nothing to be ashamed of!

We have to remember that we are NOT our jobs; our jobs are an extension of who we are. Those who know for sure that they've been cut or been given the all clear are the blessed. For separated employees, you're going to bring your "self" and all your talents to a new setting, and I can guarantee it will be for the better!

I've been waiting for the ax to fall since they announced all this c-ap in October. When they called me into the conference room on Tuesday it was surreal. I'm still in shock. I had several projects going on that will just stop and leave contractors and customers hanging. No forethought on the part of GM. No transitions. No handoffs. I feel like I let my customers down. I also feel like I am less of a person, like I can't even speak to my coworkers who made the cut. One has made it a point to call and check on me, I really appreciate that.

Having survived this in 2009, take care of yourself first. Screw GM, your loved ones need you and will never terminate you.

GM and the CFO have done irreparable damage to the current workforce with this mishandled layoff.
