Simply put, UPRR should not have the right to paint a U.S. flag on its locomotives, nor use the trademarked "Building America" message. I really think this is a pressure point where politicians, especially left leaning ones, could conceivably get on board and take some public action against UP.
It's one thing to complain to a politician about being laid off; chances are they may care, but have nothing to latch on to because quasi-monopolies that lay off hundreds of people are not something unusual in our country. However, I can definitely see a Berney Sanders railing against UP when you consider the awful hypocrisy of their use of "Building America" and having a flag on their trains.
BNSF, the "competitor" to UP has no flag on their trains.
The general public, which is very ignorant of modern freight railroads sees that UP flag and captain America shield and probably thinks "these guys are great". However, they are firing thousands of employees while making record profits and borrowing money to buy back shares from themselves.
I don't even understand how the heck UP was allowed to have an American flag on their locomotives in the first place. As I was told in the military, as custom, an American flag should only be used as a flag, i.e. flown, or a patch on a uniform; not put on disposable plates, pencils, or painted onto a daggone locomotive.
I will take my little action on this and write my congressman and try to write some others as well that may see things this way. It may not work, but out of all the things out there, this is the only one that comes to mind which would bring a modicum of public shame on UP's board and shine that spotlight on them.
