Paid Maternity leave

How come other companies have paid leave for parents like Starbucks and Walmart and Amazon but we get unpaid leave?

You do get paid maternity leave. It's called Short-Term Disability Insurance.

I never thought we actually got what we voted on. I think the benefit vote was to let us think we had a say. In actuality, the company made our benefits package purely on the amount they wanted to spend. That's why our deductible kept going up and we were responsible for paying more. Paid maternity leave. LOL!

They used to have better benefits (pre 2003,a.c.gallo) and they used to also give you 250$cash when you had a kid...and 250$when someone in your family died...thanks corps. And stockholders!!

To the poster who says paid maternity leave is in the form of short term disability you misunderstood the original poster in the scope of some of the benefits offered. Below is a list of what other companies offer there employees, generally you are right that at least in that the first 6 weeks short term disability (67% of weekly pay) plays a role in the payout but a lot of these companies are paying out to cover the percentage STD does not cover and in some cases paying out weeks in excess of the traditional 6 weeks:

*Walmart offers 10 weeks of 100% paid maternity leave and six weeks of paid parental leave. That means a new mother can take 16 paid weeks off and a new father can take 6 weeks paid.

*Starbucks offers 6 weeks 100% paid leave for all new parents. This is time is in addition to the 12 weeks of federally protected time off.

*Ikea offers 6 weeks of 100% paid leave and 6 weeks of 50% paid leave.

*Target offers 2 weeks paid leave in addition to the standard STD of 6 weeks.

*Lowes offers 10 weeks of paid maternity leave and two weeks’ paid paternity

*Amazon offers Birth mothers can now take up to four weeks of paid prepartum medical leave followed by 10 weeks of paid maternity leave. Birth mothers and all other new parents who have been at Amazon for a year or more can also take a new six-week paid parental leave. That’s is 20 weeks for new mothers and 6 weeks for new fathers.

Of the 600,000+ amazon employees over 90,000 are from WFM but Amazons benefits are not shared to WFM. As it stands WFM does not offer any leave, they offer the bare minimum via Short Term disability and follow the federal mandate of 12 weeks (but since nothing is paid most employees return within the 6 weeks window). Many of us assumed that since we were Amazon employees in terms of raising the minimum wage that same standard would extend to benefits.

Sounds about right. So much at WFM is “on the side”. If TMs have any morals at all they just have to turn a blind eye and keep working. You’d be reprimanded for exposing what’s going on. It’s all about the cover up.

Wfm does have it. Like many companies it’s in the form of short term disability. If you’re pregnant, I hope you had the foresight to sign up for it during annual benefits enrollment.

Whole Foods doesn't place value on giving birth. It's more of an inconvenience. If you're going into rehab that's different. Pretty much get whatever you ask for. Company will bend over backward with no questions asked.
