Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Do you think the will keep me, given that i reach my pension at the beginning on 2020?

Do you thin they will even care about that fact, or they will have no problem firing me in my last year? I mean, I’m a good performer and all, but as we all know that stopped being a relevant criteria a long time ago at UP.

You make a good point. Each situation is different for individual people. Generally speaking, when the UP makes a cash offer, for any reason, they are low balling the heck out of it and you can bet they're getting the better end of it.

Given the choice between hiring a lawyer and crossing fingers or taking an immediate wad of cash was a no brainer for me. I needed the cash to carry me to my next job.

What do you mean by implying that the severance is too hard to pass up is wrong? I was in my mid 50s with over 30 years and didn’t really love my job anyway. The severance was more than enough to get me out of there and move on to another job in another state.

Each situation is different.

We are all just numbers on a spreadsheet.

You are a number. Your status is no factor in their decision.

Nope. Had a co-worker get laid off with me and he was only a couple months from being vested. UP don't care.

Reach your pension or be vested in pension? I don’t think they care about anything at this point, except reaching a certain number. They don’t really need to worry about keeping certain demographics or categories of employee, because the severance is too hard to pass up and you sign your legal options away when you accept the money. So age discrimination is not an issue and they despise the pension....anything to save a buck and especially the dreaded pension liability. Also, UP self insures, so young single healthy people, who start at lower pay and don’t get sick, are their favorite kinds to hire and keep.
