Thread regarding Xerox Corp. layoffs

You are not guaranteed a severance!

I see so many people saying they are staying just for the severance - as if it was a guaranteed thing if they just wait it out. But severance is not an obligation - it is literally the company's good will on whether they will provide it or not during layoffs.

So if Xerox keeps going downhill - which it will - don't be surprised if severance is no longer a thing.

Move on with my life from this place as soon as possible if you are unhappy, don't wait for something that might never come.

If severance (or other benefit/compensation) is specifically stated in an employee's acceptance letter, the employer does have to provide notification to the impacted employee in advance aid any change (the time period typically varies based the applicable state law). Now, if severance (or other benefit\compensation program) is included in any collective agreement, including Unions, then an employer cannot take it away without negotiations.
