Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Pay Rate

Hi, this may be off topic, but I cannot seem to find the union contract with pay rates for UP train crew. I was interviewed today and I was told to expect furloughs. I’m not crazy about the idea, but I need the job. All UP says is new TC employees make around $40k. But there must be a specific hourly or daily union rate. I appreciate any help on this. Thanks.

Run away and forget about this job. They hire people just to try and fire or furlough you.

You should work for BNSF. You do not want to work for UP.

Can someone explain why UP is hiring new crews when they are laying off hundreds and hundreds of people?

Thanks to all who replied. I was told today that my status is Alternate. According to HR, there are 2 training sessions coming up, one begins in May, the other in June, and I will most likely receive an offer at some point for June.

In the meantime. I received a contingent offer from the USPS as a mail handler in a distribution plant, so I’m taking that... thanks again for the info on pay.

Depends where you work. Yard crews make around $3000 every 2 weeks.

Ok let me straighten this out for you! They tell you 40k at the interview and that is if you don't work at all and get furloughed regularly. You can pull down 55-60K easy if you get on the extra. Yard job pays vary also and they are less than road crews make. The trade off is you have a regular schedule for the sacrifice in pay. I was on the extra and I was making close to 4500 a half (That is after pay cut %). Some jobs also have guarantee. They hate to pay it and if to many get it they will cut the boards to keep from paying it. We normally hit FR and that will hit you in the guarantee as well as laying off so they rarely pay the guarantee. Training pay s---s but it's probably around 19+ an hour. There are different guarantees for different service units too. I am on the CNW guarantee and that is higher than most other service unit guarantee. Like I said the pay scale varies by service unit so IF you get hired talk to some other people to get a better estimate of what you can make!

Go somewhere else and get a job. Starting out now, you will go through training and then get furloughed. It’s not worth it.

My first FULL year as train service I made 55k. This was in 2015 but I worked my tail off to get that and I was never furloughed during that time.

Its very dependent on many different factors. One day I may make $35 and hour....another day $50 an hour....In the beginning you'll be pulling down more like $20 an hour. Once you start working and encounter the pay variables first hand, you'll understand why the vagueness around it. Different locations have slightly different factors that come into play which affect your pay as well.

Well wrong again. Machinist, Electricians, Boilermakers, and Sheetmetal Workers all make 100%. Haven’t done the 75% since the late 80’s

It's a tough road the first couple years fella. Yeah figure 40k first year or two. Year 3 and 4 things will start to look up pay wise and otherwise. Maybe you're one of the lucky ones and avoid being on furlough too long. Word of advice: while you are on a board and can work...Do it. In otherwords stay marked up and make all the money you can PRIOR to being furloughed. If that means you're working several days straight and you're getting tuckered out...s--- it up and get er done. Good luck with training...pay attention and study the materials closely. Eliminate distractions and Focus on your NEW Career.

If you need the job take it but keep looking. Depending on the craft, training will takes several months. they are correct they are most certainly going to furlough you if not immediately after your training then sometime within your first two years. The fact that you’re looking at a lay-off website and you haven’t even been hired yet says it all. You said train crew. conductor training is around 4 months give or take including rcl training and all the ojt.

Some mechanical(machinist and electricians) start at 100%. Most others start at 75%.

All employees start at 75% regardless if you are mechanical or transportation, it takes 3 to 4 years to get to scale, I would encourage you not to worry about the contract at this point, just worry about getting thru you derail without getting fired! You really dont make any money until you mark up on a job! Good luck with your training, your going to need it! Be ready four furlough though!
