Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Looking to change roles within Cisco. Looking for advice.

I'm looking to change roles within Cisco. My one year is in April. Is it too soon to apply internally?

Any other advice on changing roles?

Hi brother,

You can very well do an internal switch, I have seen people moving to other teams in BLR after 1 year and even getting an up-grade on top of that. Keep trying.

Applying internally rarely works, unless you already know the HM and have discussed opportunities. You have to leverage your network to move roles successfully.

Not too soon, but it all depends on your manager and how supportive they are. In general, Cisco doesn't allow managers to hold back employees' career moves, but they may request extended transition periods. In my part of CX, I've seen people move after a year, but 18 - 24 months is more common and less likely to draw a negative response.

Your manager is entitled to refuse your move. One year is absolute minimum to move, but isn’t looked well upon. Stay another 6 months at least, but better 12.

It will also be thought poorly of by hiring managers that you are moving so quickly. They will want someone with stronger staying power.

it's easier to find a role externally, you might be politically punished for attempting to switch roles internally
