Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

This place is toxic

I don't understand how they can get rid of people who have given their everything to UP so easily...

Everybody here works so hard - and then they walk all over us and dismiss us like we never existed - while the company is doing great!!!

How is that okay? Everybody should leave this toxic place. Let them scramble to run this place without any people...

Carloadings are down right now, but I’d say business overall is still in the “good” category

The best thing about not working for UP anymore is enjoying your life again. The 2nd best thing is spreading the word about how much UP s---s.

Someone in Omaha asked me if UP was laying off because of coal. I let everyone know that it’s just a money grab and business is great. People have had such a positive impression of UP for so many decades, that they think it’s just business conditions and are really surprised when told it’s just greed.

Op, you are so right..

Omaha isnt a big enough town to trash people and think someone with 15 years of knowledge skills and abilities can step right in.

Up is dead to me. Should be dead to omaha and any other community it has a major presence.

Staggers needs to be reviewed. ASap

I do want to point out that Lance and most of the rest involved are NOT Nebraskans. They all came from elsewhere. Now Jim Young, who valued his employees, was a Nebraskan! UP has not been the same since he died.

" Whenever an injury occurs then we’re part of the “UP family”and we nearly lost a member of the “family” guys. But when it’s time for layoffs to boost the profit of the stock holders it’s just capitalism.... After record profits and a huge tax break. "

One of the most incisive things written about this whole debacle. I'll be sure to save it. Remember, you can always contact journalists as well. You'd be surprised, they write back, and it's important to send some of these guys a differing opinion. I recommend reading up on UP in the Wall Street Journal, just google it, and write to those writing positive or neutral pieces on PSR.

It may not make a difference, but outside of our echo chamber here, the mainstream media just thinks that UP is doing a-ok, just another cost cutting of admin personnel. When you write to those who write the blasse articles about UP, and talk to them, you plant that important seed of doubt.

Remember, the vast majority of Americans, including stock traders, do not have any proper understanding of freight railroads, their history, what it takes to run them, their social contract, quasi-monopoly, and on and on....

Anyway, I don't want to take the spotlight off you; very well written. FYI, I looked at UP like my family and never thought that a group of Nebraskans, that seemed to care about the company long term, would turn out to be what they are. Yup, I woke up.

"The same people that will say it’s just capitalism are the tools that will get all weepy when UP shows a courage to care video and talk about how much of a family “we” are. ..."

This is one of the very best posts I've read here.

The same people that will say it’s just capitalism are the tools that will get all weepy when UP shows a courage to care video and talk about how much of a family “we” are. Can’t have it both ways. Whenever an injury occurs then we’re part of the “UP family”and we nearly lost a member of the “family” guys. But when it’s time for layoffs to boost the profit of the stock holders it’s just capitalism.... After record profits and a huge tax break.

If anything let this be a wake up call that UP is not your family unless you had an abusive father and an alcoholic mother. They aren’t even a responsible business. They understand nothing about a social contract with their workers or the country in which they operate. They operate under a monopoly due to the government’s belief that it is what is best for our country. But are they making decisions now that are in the best interests of the nation’s freight system? I think not. All short term goals to boost the profits of activist shareholders.

It's NOT okay. Some people will say...its just business...capitalism...etc. But in truth, It's just plain WRONG. You know that and I know that. Many many others know it too. In time, justice will be served to those who behave in such a vile manner. They will recieve what they deserve. Don't worry yourself about that...it can be counted on. In the meantime, you have to do/go where you can be happy and content. If that means leaving, then heck yeah go find a better environment. Plenty of other railroad and non-railroad jobs out there where life is not so toxic.
