Flattened organization

We were told the new "flattened" organization would make things simpler

Am I the only one finding it more complicated? My new manager has no time because he has so many people reporting to him. It's impossible to get answers and he has no idea what anyone does. So much for "think big, make it simple and move fast!"

I guess by flattened they meant less like "simpler" and more like "Wile E. Coyote below a fast approaching gigantic boulder"

I don't know about everyone else but last year, we just ignored the goals we spent time drafting because the company came up with questions instead. What a waste of time!

It's amusing that we go through the motions of drafting goals every year. It's so pointless. Performance standards mean nothing anymore and it must just be to satisfy stockholder metrics or who knows what.

One positive development: My manager just emailed everyone their annual raises. No time for individual meetings with so many people reporting to them. We all know we’re getting 2-3% anyway so we’ve eliminated the farce. The old managers spent valuable hours doing reviews and mid year checkins. Let’s eliminate all that nonsense as well.

Its cheaper, thats why. And also sets up future team consolidations and layoffs. By cutting layers they can at least see more easily who does what (or doesnt). Its the right thing to do, but dont be fooled by the new speak (think big, yeah haha, and stolen from amazon)...

The place is such a sinking ship. It's amusing to watch them reap the consequences of such poor decisions. Good for you for declining their offer.

When my Director position was eliminated 12/31/18, I was offered the opportunity to apply for one of the new Lead positions. It would have been almost no content/editorial work, almost all adm/performance reviews/budget/reports to the boss. In short, everything for which I did not join the company. Part of the new position would have been exactly what you describe--so many people reporting to me in the name of "flattening" (pulverizing?) the organization that there would be time to do everything but actual content-based, customer-focused work. No.
