Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Departments outsourced, working with the bare minimum of manpower and an army of furloughed workers waiting to jump in.

Many of us don’t like to hear this, but for me this looks like the recipe for the company that the leadership is trying to implement. First they want to eliminate any logg time employees in the areas that don’t have connections with actual railroadin and I wouldn’t be surprised if they outsource entire departments, anything that doesn’t physically have to be positioned in the US. Also operating with the bare minimum of workforce is the way they want to go and if that’s not possible there are always furloughed that don’t have the opportunity to find another job and in that sense are willing to come back for a small pay. #sadbuttrue

I don't agree with 100% of OP, but I agree with the basic sentiment behind it. why do you think they try to call people off the bump board? If you need more conductors add spots to the regular board. why do they ask conductors (cut back engineer) to step up as engineers? if you need more engineers, add spots to the engineer board. why do they ask a guy on the AW board that's brand new to step up as regular conductor and go into unfamiliar territory? And let's not even talk about some of the air tests performed on these trains to get them out on time. If you don't think UP isn't already cutting corners to make stuff happen you must not work in the field.

There is a reason why Jim Y. and other CEOs before him didn’t outsource the workforce. Consulting firms have been around for decades...if it were less expensive and resulted in a better product it would have been done years ago.
