Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Unfriendly and harsh attitude but they get away with it

Some people get raises but there's no across the board cost of living or salary increase just because. You can always ask for a raise but unless you're a favorite of your VP, it's unlikely you'll get one. Unlike normal companies - Oracle has no reason to incent employees to stay. If you don't like your salary, you can leave. I've had to deliver that message to my team many times and they seem to get it now, but there's no usual employee retention or desire to keep you happy. Oracle can replace you in seconds and often does. No one is special and no one cares if you stay or go. Unfriendly and harsh attitude but they get away with it.

I haven't been debauchery-d on any of my family vacations lately but I think the point was your vacation time isn't a big deal to most professionals. One week more or less isn't going to make me change my career goals. And Americans are used to the limited 3 or 4 weeks but that's not changing - US companies will never offer the generous time off that Europeans get. Certainly not Oracle, even if we have "unlimited" time off - most don't take it take it or will ask - it labels you as a slacker and not interested in your job. May be wrong attitude but that's the way Americans are labeled.

Who says vacations are about debauchery? Have you ever been to London or Paris; or anywhere outside of North America? Why do you equate vacations about getting drunk in Cancun?

Paid time off is important. Yes, Americans have been conditioned to be content with 2 weeks of vacation, but it doesn't have to be that way.

would you seriously stay at this soul s---ing job because of vacation days? if that's how you view your career priorities - you probably should go. who cares about vacation days? are you hyped about spring break? going to cancun and downing shots and partying? mature, professional people care about careers, mobility, personal success - not vacation days. you can walk down the street from HQ and get a better job, more money and "vacation days" at any tech company and be better off than staying.

what's pathetic about the situation is that your manager promotes you but you don't get a raise!

yes I can say we do care about our future and careers and but is easier said than done. while you may want to move to a different company, that means you have to start all over again like vacation days, flexibility, etc. while jobs are easy up in northern California, it's not that easy to find when you are in a different state/city.

It's a sad place. Unfortunately, that policy gets rid of anyone who cares about their career and their job. It's the people who can't find another job that stay at Oracle. Those are the ones running it all into the ground.

If you care about your future and your career, you need to move on.

And he likes jerks like MH whom he is working with - where else could he do that!

This would be funny if real people were not affected, because one LE quote has him famously saying he started his own company so he could work with people he liked.
