Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Do not demonize all managers!

I am a unit manager and I do not agree with any of the changes that are being made . but like another commenter said, I have a family to support and I can't just up and leave the job. It's not about having morals or not having morals, it's about survival. Trust me, I think the forced ranking system is ridiculous. The company is going downhill in many ways. Do not demonize all managers! We're not all the same! It took me 9 years to get to the position that I'm in! I treat my direct reports very fairly. They know me very well and I know them very well. I don't know how the Force rank system will play out, but I can tell you that it makes me sick to my stomach. Do not demonize all managers. We are in the same boat as everyone else!!!

I tend to agree with @Y7DGX2u-1nrm on thid

@Wow Let’s be serious cray-cray. You are not a great manager nevermind leader and your team does whatever you dump on them because well, they have no backbone. You are the typical show up at meetings, always unprepared and mostly pretending you know what you’re talking about type manager. Let’s be real....you typed cray-cray. That likely indicates your intelligence or maybe your level of self-awareness

Some of you should be ashamed of yourselves. This Thread has turned into nothing more than online bullying. Grow up. We're all adults here. Stop attacking each other, it does no good for anyone. It seems layoffs are inevitable, no one can control the future, please stop attacking each other. Please use this site for its intended purpose, not to bully each other.

Thank you.

Your responses here, as a manager, speak loudly.

Referring to someone as cray-cray and threatening them to use EAP "while they still can" is the reason many employees are so vehement towards management.

Employees don't feel they can have an honest dialogue with management.

This could and should have been approached in a more humbling way. Simply stating - I understand that the environment has created confusion and while I'm not able to provide full disclosure on all changes taking place, I will do my best communicate efforts we are looking at to potentially reshape and could change what we do today. I will always try to minimize impact where I am able to have any type of input into decision making that is occurring.

So to those employees who are managed by this manager, I apologize on his or her behalf.

Some of you are cray-cray. Why are you coming for managers all of a sudden? What exactly do you expect the managers to do? Disobey the new policies that are set forth by those high above them? Do you expect them to rebel in some glorious dramatic way? You seem so angry and bitter towards managers. Is it because perhaps you are not one and yet wish you were the very thing you seem to hate? Maybe you need to look into using the EAP, you know, while you still can.

You're a manager. You represent management. You're just as culpable. Stand your ground and act like a man/woman ... enough with with the cop-outs.

No...I'm NOT reeking of guilt. I have done nothing wrong. Don't blame the managers for the things that Charles Scharf has done. Managers are in the same boat with everyone else. It's not managers vs employees. It's all of us vs this crazy CEO. Trust me, im not doing anything to ruin my direct reports careers. There are definitely a few underperformers on my team, but they were underperforming well before this forced ranking system came about.

No offense but Unit Manager is too low to be a decision maker. The guilty parties are considerably higher up the chain.

No,not at all,I agree many are not but I don’t know how they can rate someone unfairly when they know it’s not right. I couldn’t sleep at night if I knew I possibly had hurt someone’s career unjustifiably.

What about survival of the employees who are unfairly rated as does not meet expectations. I cant even get an interview in the bank because of it. I tried. Denied denied denied!! We have families too and need to survive.
