Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Taking the severance or start looking for a new job ASAP?

This question keeps popping up in my head recently. With the current situation at the company, I figure that we will all soon arrive at the chopping block. Just can’t figure out what’s the smart think to do, start looking for a new job, the sooner the better, or wait it out, get laid off, collect the severance and then try to find a new job. Opinions???

I'd say that depends on the number of yrs employed with Oracle. If you are a long term employee, I understand the desire to collect the severance. However, the job market is not super friendly to older people so the more time you have in Oracle, the older you are, naturally. You have to weigh the pros and cons. I would at the very least, start gathering your personal data off of Oracle's internal sites, print out anything in HR you want to keep. Get stuff out of your email. UPDATE YOUR RESUME. Start at least looking at what is out there so you aren't caught off guard when you don't have any control over the situation (getting let go).

Looking for something now keeps you in the driver's seat. Waiting for the axe to fall is toxic and motivation crushing. You may find your dream job in the process.

You already know Oracle s---s and is slowing s---ing the life out of you.

Oracle lays off people really slowly. You could sit there for years, working on obsolete tech, getting no reasonable experience. That will only add to the problems in changing jobs, also being older is NOT an advantage. Get going now.

the sooner the better....you will join your new org with higher salary, which will compensate for any missed severance in a year or sooner.

START LOKING NOW!!!! Omg - what are you waiting for?! If you finding a new jobs coincides with layoff/ severance - great, otherwise thank God if you wind a better job and can leave before they lay you off. Get going bud!

Depends. If you can afford to be out of work ~6 months and are still marketable, then wait for the severance.

Else find another job. Most ppl live paycheck to paycheck .... so being out of work, even with a severance, is uncomfortable for them.

Depends. If you can retire then wait to get a severance. If not then find new job

OP: it's easier to look for a new job while being employed, before an Indian H1B takes over your job here in America.

Conventional wisdom is it is easier to get a new job while employed than unemployed.
