Capitalism does not necessarily mean allowing shareholder primacy, nor does it mean recognizing corporations as people with regard to first amendment rights. The opposite of corporatism is not communism. We’ve had pretty good capitalism-with-regulations before, and we need to get back to treating people better.

@ 1lii:

I beg to differ. The Republican Party has held the reigns of power in the national legislature since 2014, and until January governed the United States as a united government under a single party. They also hold the majority of state legislatures.

The Executive Branch of government (i.e. the president) appoints nearly 4,000 people to executive agencies that directly oversee the regulation of labor, transportation, and finance. Under Republican governance the regulatory apparatus (FRA, NTSB, etc.) has become more accommodating to business. Those of you wondering where the FRA is when you need them now have part of your answer.

Republican judicial appointees (notably Neil Gorsuch) have shown considerable hostility towards unions and collective bargaining in their jurisprudence. Look up Janus v. AFSCME if you doubt that. The Republican majority Supreme Court also severely limited the ability of employees to file class-action lawsuits against employers, reducing the ability of workers to seek redress of greivences through the federal courts.

These are but a few of many examples of anti-labor measures being taken by Republican leaders at the local, state, and national levels. There has been nothing like it since the 1920s. Vote for them if you want, but don't complain about what you get.

Republican party has nothing to do with this. We were strangled and on the verge of layoffs back at the end of 2015 in quite a few areas. Hell even iuoe is behind the current policies and theyve been hardcore democrat for years. I suspect your one of the union bretheren who always hides behind rules and regs to not work or do as little as possible while you put in your 8 and go home.

The layoffs and furloughs are, above all, a tactic being employed to break (the already nearly dead) railroad unions.

In the near term, much of the work done by those unionized workers will be shifted to a combination of outside contractors and management trainees (the latter under the guise of "training"). The executive leadership seemes to have realized that this is cheaper than paying union employees $80,000 per year to bust sod, in addition to the sizeable pension and benefit packages they also receive.

What is remarkable, is the level of support that the union rank and file (especially in UP) has for the current republican government, which may be the most anti-union administration since that of Calvin Coolidge.

Until those of you who are having your lives disrupted by current corporate and government policies begin thinking and acting in your own interests and not against them, I don't think you should complain or expect much sympathy.

To the person who said all managers are granted stock, that is not true.

I am a manager and yes, I have stock. But I know plenty of other managers who don’t. It depends very much on department and level.

And the number of shares they give us is not a lot, and for most of us that do get stock, it’s restricted, meaning we can’t sell it for X number of years after it’s given. And if we get laid off, UP prorates it and takes back what we haven’t vested.

Has anyone noticed UP stock is up almost $8 today? Guys we are in a world of trouble. The investors just gave management the incentive to take things to the next level. Someone told me that everyone non-union employee is granted stock now. That means an entire building in Omaha and managers everywhere that make money off cutting us front line guys - it’s about to get way worse! I have 9 months left and hope to God I can survive!

And they aren’t even close to done. Csx operating ratio is at 59. We’re at 63 they want to be below 60 by the end of the year. After they cut thousands we’re still not close to where they want to be. Many many more people are going to be out of a job.
