Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Just in how much danger are non-core positions at UP?

I work in IT, my team was cut to the bone, and we are working to the border of humanly possible, so I figured it would be impossible to cut more workers, unless of course, they plan to outsource the whole damn thing. On the other hand , there is that saying that all workers that are not actual railroad workers are always in more danger, Just how true is that?

I would look for another job (if you aren't already).

I think they’ve only fired the individual contributors in IT, in hopes that this will blow over and when it’s time to rebuild UP, the execs will say, “We spared you and need you to be loyal as we ask you to rebuild the place. Now go hire a bunch of cheap interns and college grads to do the actual work.”

UP IT Department going to suffer when major capital projects come to close. General Driectors/Sr Directors/Directors/Sr Managers will out number individual contributors 3 to 1.

And thats no bull, I work there.

UP is a corporation, not a railroad.

Stockholders and lawyers run the

Place.

I heard the IT department at Union Pacific can’t even write a basic hello world program. When asked to do it, the senior IT manager brought in a physical globe of the earth, hid it behind his back as he walked in, and then raised it up over his head and said “hello world!”. Lance gave him a promotion after seeing his creativity. The end.

UP once was a great railroad which understood the value of a real IT department. But LT is gone and IT is in the lurch. Now UP is striving to be just like any other mediocre Class I railroad, with big plans to succeed in spite of itself.

I've heard of developers leaving little 'presents' in their code that will run if they are not still employed long enough to prevent them from running.

if you know anything about outsourcing, you'd know you outsource your non-core activities that don't give you a competitive advantage. UP is not going to outsource conductors and engineers and have in-house IT department. UP is a Railroad not an IT company.

what? all departments besides operating? seems like operating would be the hardest to outsource. I think IT and everything else would be easy to outsource. if you think it is fear mongering look at other companies that have done it. keep sticking around out of loyalty and see what happens.

Its next to impossible to outsource all departments besides operating. People love to spread fear.
