Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

How is the job market looking these days?

I know that’s a general question, but I would like to see some experiences from folks that left Verizon and started applying at other companies (including VSP-ers). How long does it take to find a new job? How do other telecom companies look at former Verizon employees? Any tips?

Last day was 3/22, first day at the new job was 4/1. DC job marker is pretty good right now, especislly if you know anything about network security. I'm 50 and had no trouble. A fellow 49 yo coworker had a job within a week too. Don't fall for the doom and gloom. Fearful people aren't happy unless they are spreading the fear they operate under.... There is plenty of opportunity for us 'decrepit' 50somethings.

Lots of jobs in the Dallas, TX area...just saying. NJ has always been a rathole.

Sometime’s it’s human nature to slap lipstick on a pig as a means of saving face and deluding yourself that the right choices were made and you’re on the right track. It’s a blessed coping mechanism that helps the mind deal with disappointment and keeps one out of sadness.

@pux, you say you got RIF’d from a job you loved a year ago, were out of work 6 months and then, the best of three offers you got had “comparatable” [sic] pay and insurance that’s not as good, yet you say “the job market is pretty good from my experience”. Seems to me, you took a step down? Am I missing something?

As the job market’s good, why not keep looking until you’re on an equal or better footing than you had been accustomed to, rather than settling?

The job market in NJ is terrible. I was part of the head count lay off from over a year ago. We only got the severance.

@zpy ... Why should Verizon hire educated & experienced employees? Verizon is looking for cheap labor to boost stock buybacks & dividends, the company is not trying to innovate or transform an industry. Publicly traded corporations do not want educated, experienced, or skilled employees.

Publicly traded corporations typically want cheap, uneducated, complacent employees. You don't enroll at a community college, and complain about the quality of education.

There is not much of a job market in NJ. The Garden State hit an iceberg and is sinking, smart people are grabbing life boats out of the state.

Your timing was fortuitous in one way @pux, though it must have been horrible to swallow that there was a very financially lucrative VSP bonus put on the table mere months after you were shown the door, after having spent years and years here no doubt. Alas, missed opportunity. On the upside, if you remained in the telecom realm, you were not competing against 10,000 other people simultaneously on the national level. Best of everything going forward.

It’s a little sad that you are still here on this site, rather than having embraced your new life and being able to move on. You will find peace.

The job market is pretty good from my experience. I was RIF'd about a year ago and I was able to choose from three separate job offers once I started looking. And I am 56 years old. I did keep current with skills and did my best to display a good attitude. I am very happy with the job I accepted, been in it about 6 months. Less stress from my VZ days, pay is comparatable, insurance almost as good, but the rest of the benefit package is excellent. I loved my years at VZ, but there are very good opportunities after VZ.

It’s funny. If I’m looking for someone to hire as a doctor, a lawyer, a banker, a construction expert, an accountant, an investment advisor, and a number of other fields, seeing an image with a gray hair or two often puts me at ease, rather than having the opposite affect.

It’s when I see a gentleman or -woman that appears to still be in HS that I get nervous. I think an inclusive mixture of diverse backgrounds and age groups is preferable.

@jbi, there’s even a trend now to no longer even require college, never-mind experience.

Pretty much anything rather than having to hire somebody older.

Despite a proven track record and experience, companies would prefer to look to high school grads, GEDs, foreigners, and ex-cons, and look upon more mature people with disdain. Look no further than the pictures on company websites and LinkedIn. You must be excluded and even the image of you hidden away.

None of the people I know who left have gotten a paying job. For those longer back I’d they quit most are happy with their new job which they knew from the start was better. All the ones riffed are miserable unless they were right near retirement and most don’t have a full time job.

50? That must vary it seems to go down to 30 in some fields or at leaf with current hiring only wanting college grads with no experience.

OP, in response to your post:

My poor ex-boss got a job he hates with an outfit that doesn’t require a HS degree, and he gets paid a lot less money.

As far as these “other telecom companies” you’re referring to, what ones are expanding and hiring?

As for the tip you requested: don’t leave unless

  • you have something to offer and are younger than the dreaded 50 cutoff, or

  • you are financially prepared to be fully retired, without needing employment, or

  • you have a spouse who can carry the burden on their lone income, or

  • you’re close to SS and Medicare, or

  • you’re on your way out.

Hold your breath and don't spend all your money right away!!

Also, ageism, how old you are and how less you are willing to accept.....

And, the answer is in the question as to WHY did VZ IT (assuming its IT jobs) displace (rebadged/ESP) employees????

Please let me know your thoughts.

Please let us know your fate.

This impostor could be wrong??????????
