Hans: we will give you $1 million to figure out why we are spending $20 billion.

“A great streaming experience happens at 15megs or better and speeds of a 100 are common on cable and FiOS.”

I personally don’t see it useful for the phone. A lot of people will buy phones though and they can charge it to the cell phone side and get into the home business again sans techs. Verizon Fios is only available in a small footprint and once everyone goes to 5G at home (in a fantasy future) then no cable to the home. Just going home 5G wouldnt be a go but provide home 5G and maybe link it with their cell phone bundle lock the “cord cutter” in to a true cord cut that locks them to VZ.

@YI1d3iZ-5pux good bet on the future. If people need that BW do you think Verizon can byuild it in a day. It takes years to to gain expertise in buildout. Also there may be places where it makes sense to deply the 5G gear rather than 4G gear when building out/replacing

I dont think mm wave 5G is needed though because its not a true replacement for 4G amd doesnt cover enough people per antenna

"5G looks like a good bet."

A good bet on what? Does it improve sales or reduce expenses? So far it looks like a one-way bet.

I think there is value to starting the 5G. Business is about betting for the future. 5G looks like a good bet. Starting early give the company knowledge about what is to be done and tweak it for most value. Agreed there is no need to make it the main initiative. Implement it only in limited markets

I think Hans has his girl scouts out here trying to cover his flanks. The OP asks a good question. Just because there are cars that can drive at 242MPH does not mean that everyone wants to or needs to own one. Just saying.

What is the business case and value proposition of gigabit speed for customers now?

There isn't one.

A great streaming experience happens at 15megs or better and speeds of a 100 are common on cable and FiOS.

So why would a customer, happy with 4G LTE, spend $1,300?

Where is the new money coming from, and what is in it for the customer to pay more for equipment that they don't really need?

Is 5G the new Oath?

I agree with you about Apple. However, Comcast does not offer gigabit nationwide. And their service being affordable is a matter of perspective. Sad part is that the areas that cable/fios don't currently serve won't be served by 5G either.

Build it and they will come? Just like the highways? Gimme a break. Guess what? The LTE highway is already built and it's chugging along just fine. No one is going to pay for "tiered" access to LTE. They'll be happy with the speeds they have now. "But, I can download a movie in seconds!" Who downloads anything now? Sssssstreaming!

The benefit of 5G being able to stream live video in 4K? Who cares? If you haven't noticed, cord cutting is rampant, Verizon owns no video content (Gooooooo90!), and video is the least profitable for the legacy cable carriers. "But I'll eventually be able to get up to 1GBps speeds to my home or phone!" But at what monthly cost and when? Comcast already offers Gig speeds...nationwide, and it's affordable.

It's not always best to be first. Look at Apple. They're always last to market with a product. The iPod was the last great mp3 player to market, but dominated. The iPhone didn't come out until 2007...and obliterate the then ubiquitous BlackBerry and changed the game. The iPad revolutionized the tablet market, when tablets had been out for years. And then the Apple Watch...the #1 selling smart watch, came after several Samsung flops.

The race to build out the 5G network will be Verizon's undoing.

All: Starting May 16th the 5G phone will cost $1,300 and is the first to support Verizon's 5G network without requiring an accessory.

The average personal cell phone user doesnt care about 5G.

The onslaught of 5G talk across Verizon is laughable.

It will be a decade before 5G is fully implemented, calm down.

The government's of the world will use this 5g more than private industries will, to keep tabs on the public et al. This is more a technology to pry and spy than it is to download a movie in a half a second as opposed to waiting a minute on 4g.

If you gotta give a $1 million prize to justify buildout of a new technology, something's wrong.

OP, you’re such a Luddite.

I say, pay me to build it, and they will come.

Once the highways were built, suddenly loads of cars sold, lots of gas stations opened, many motels and hotels built far from centers of population, all to accommodate drivers on the highways.

This new superhighway will similarly lead to new things, simply because it’s there to be utilized.

The genius of those planners of yesteryear is that they built highways, subways, bridges... on such a massive scale that, even if they weren’t fully utilized in their infancy, they allowed for extreme growth and still serve just as well generations down the line.

OP, you’re thinking small ball, while others are aiming for the major league.
