Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Is there a legal cap for how much workers they can furlough?

I have no knowledge about it but I’m just thinking out loud, If there isn’t any legal cap isn’t the furlough then just a handy instrument in the hands of the leadership to force a worker to look for another job and leave on his own, therefore eliminating the need to pay him any sort of severance?

Yeah it’s definitely not a courtesy. A lot of these severance packages have certain stipulations you agree to abide by to take it. UP and other companies that do that are looking out for their interests.

Severance is paid to non-agreement, partly out of courtesy, but far more out of covering the company’s butt. When you take the severance, you agree not to take any legal action. Keeps old people and minorities from suing. To think this company is doing anything out of courtesy is a real stretch these days.

No company has to pay a severance when releasing someone. Its usually a courtesy. Furlough is just temporary (even though it could be years) meaning they call you back when needed. Typically when a company lays off they arent required to call you back.
