We did not see it coming, they told us our shop was not going to be affected - 30 carman furloughed (laid-off) from Palestine Car Shop today.

I worked there 18 years. Medically retired now. Before I left, UP was fully engaged in the Lean Initiative. S----ups were in full force. 95% would not buy into it cause they knew the end result was lay-offs. Management swore, if we all got on board, there would be no lay-offs. Well guess what brown - nosers? You empowered the company to offer good jobs to the local community just to see them unemployed. Karma is a $^!

It happened - 30 Carmen furloughed and 2 foreman bumped to Carmen. We each got a letter dated April 25, 2019, That says “Effective this day is your notice that abolishments in your craft will result in your furlough...Sincerely, Roderick Riley, Sr Mgr System Car Facility”

30 carmen and 2 foremen to be exact. Those facts are coming from the 32 people without jobs but who still have families to take care of. What does the higher ups of UP care though? All about money and no thought to safety for the people left in the shop.
Operating ratio is still high, nobody is safe.
