Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

What’s the deal with UP hiring?

See a lot of job postings from UP, and from what I’ve seen many of them are for positions that got hit hard by layoffs. Is it some kind of sick joke or has their genius plan been all along just to simply replace long-timers with cheap youngsters. Great growth strategy .

Exactly which jobs posted right now have been hit hard by layoffs?

Y’all are thinking about this too hard. If they specifically said they were firing you because you were too old and you could prove it, you would win a lawsuit. That’s not going to happen and that’s not the way it works although people are let go for more reasons than simply downsizing.

Non-agreement won’t sue, because they’ll lose their severance. UP lawyers figured that out a long time ago. The trick is to lay off enough without getting too much attention, while putting enough older expensive people into the mix in sufficient numbers to blend them in. Even if they do reveal a trend, it’s severance or legal action and there’s too much risk in legal action against a company with so many lawyers and so many law firms on retainer.

I dont think its pr mastery, because they stuggle mightily, however, nobody challenges them, or people just expect thats how a big rr acts

The "deal" is to weaken the unions and to substitute (expensive) union labor with cheaper and more flexible new-hires and/or contractors. This is also true (allowing for a minor shift in context) for professional services such as IT, engineering, and especially junior management.

It is actually interesting that UP has been able to carry it off to the extent that they have. Their public relations capability appears to have been underestimated.

Also, the railroad benefits and pension (by far the best in the domestic private sector) is a massive financial liability for UP, and they are keen to reduce it in any way possible.

If you look at the jobs, they ask for ged only. Dumbing down the workforce and paying them less

talking about at-will non-agreement people that were let go. Obviously, Union is determined by the agreements.

If its an agreement position it doesn't matter how old or young you are. Everyone gets paid the same for each bid job.

Um they have to call people back off furlough. If everyone denies it then they hire.

Thats typical dude and has been going on for a while. Sad but reality. Even with at will employment you can’t just fire people for whatever. For instance, they can’t fire you because you’re “too old”. That is an equal opportunity violation and a lawsuit you’d win. But they can fire certain people they want gone under a mass layoff and then rehire someone else quickly thereafter and you can’t do anything about it.
