Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Talent gone forever

UP pay and benefits are not the best and only have gotten worse with the last contract. The only thing that was attractive about working for UP was job security. Knowing that you had a job every day and do what you loved to do (work on diesel electric locomotives) and put food on the table for your family was great. It's a shame that the company spent alot of capital training and certifying employees to only loose it for short term gains. With PSR job security is nonexistent and the talent that was let go is gone forever. Today marks day 8 with my new employer and my skills are greatly appreciated. I'll always miss my brothers and sisters and wish them all the best. As for Omaha, only time will tell.

I come back mostly to discuss the unadulterated rot that permeates every aspect of the UP work culture, especially on the non-agreement side.

What I don't come here to do is kick people while they're already being kicked all day, every single day.

People who bought into the culture, had friends, and identified as UP family come back here to see how things are going, provide support, and slowly detach from a place they thought they’d work at for the rest of their careers. It’s possible to have a life and come back here to check in once in a while...

To the person below that asks why people come back to these boards to share their experiences. I’m sorry that you are so insecure that you can’t congratulate someone for moving on to better things. My question is if you are so in love with UP why are you on this website? Go join the UP steam fan club on Facebook.

It’s entertaining and I have friends that still work out there. I invested so many years into this place it’s in my blood I guess. I probably need to get a life. My new job actually gives me time off and I don’t know what to do with it lol. I sometimes even try and log onto the company web site just because of habit.

If you honestly have a new job that you love so much why would you come back to these boards? Weird....

Look at the CEO and the rest of the executive team.

Assuming that in any company only the best, most qualified, and most capable people rise to the top, we can only conclude that UP can do a (much) better job of attracting and retaining corporate talent.

The best and most talented people generally leave as soon as they get a decent offer from a reputable company. There's no reason to stay at UP unless you have nowhere else to go.

Congratulations on your success! I too have a new job outside of the railroad and it is surreal. I will never work for the RR again. Good luck!
