Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

UP could never attract and retain top talent

The ability of UP to attract and retain top corporate talent was always in question for the following reasons:

First, the company is based in Omaha. Nobody wants to live in Omaha.

Second, there is no work-life balance. Nobody wants to be on call 24/7/365, work 24 hour shifts, or be subject to recall from vacation (if you can even get your manager to approve it to begin with). Also, no sick time. Really.

Third, UP does not put people in positions that match their qualifications. If you're going to walk around calling yourself "Director of Track/Bridge/Signal Maintence" you should have something to your name besides a GED (ex. masters degree in transportation engineering and a state liscense).

Finally, there's the unions. Enough said.

I wouldn’t say I came to UP looking to put it on my resume and move on. I thought I’d found a career. (Haha the joke was on me.) However, when I got ready to leave, having a degree made it much easier to find another job.

Why do so many of you think that doing the same thing the same way for years on end supersedes having relevant qualifications for a position?

Even the agreement/craft employees have certifications that pertain to their jobs. Why is it a problem to require the same of managers, directors and other professionals?

I think a lot of you non-college types are upset because unlike those of us who spent the time and money on our education to make ourselves more marketable, and came to UP to put it on our resumes and move on, you neanderthals are stuck where you are with no transferable or relevant skills. Truth hurts, doesn't it?

That fact that so many of you don't see the problem of having (unqualified) people like yourselves in charge of large, complex, and globally-integrated systems speaks volumes about what is wrong with UP (and why it will never be fixed).

Two types of entitlement at up.

First is the millenials, want the job pay and title in exchange for thier degree.

Second is, the folks that have been there 20 years and clinging on hoping for 30 and retirement.

Sounds like someone is upset for having so much school debt and nothing to show for it. You will get out of your parents basement soon, I promise. I am so tired of people with a college degree thinking they are better than someone without. Unless you have gone into a really specific field of work, your psychology degree has no merit for the job you think you deserve. What is most troubling, is that you think that piece of paper is worth more than the person that has spent 15+ years building actual work experience. ENTITLEMENT is real.

I’ve lived in many places and I’ve chosen Omaha over both Dallas and Chicago.

In my 10 years there, i never saw a outside hire into a management role that had real deal experience, and even when they did, they had questionable backgrounds in why they did.

Omaha this, omaha that. Reality is, nobody would up and relocate here willingly. Unless you spell omaha DALLAS or CHICAGO

It is obvious that many of you have never been near a college campus.

Managers in almost every large company are required to have (at least) a bachelor's degree or higher. UP is the only company I ever worked for that promoted people with no qualifications. I don't care if someone did the same thing for thirty years. That doesn't qualify you to run a large and complex rail system.

It looks like the original poster pinched a nerve.

Maybe if some of you had gone to school and finished you wouldn't be stuck in your miserable job at a miserable company.

FYI: Not every manager is a sniveling snowflake fresh out of school. Some of us had both qualifications and experience before joining the railroad.

What I see with the railroad is that it attracts a lot of people with psychological problems and personality disorders. Ego’s, control freaks, pathological liars, and jealous types. People that can not function in a normal corporate world, so they end up at the railroad.

The railroad is flush with societies ilk that no normal person would want to stay.

Sounds like another engineering associate who learned with their "Degree"!!, that if it works on a flow chart or spreadsheet it must work in the field!! Maybe these clowns should have a real job before hiring as a manager.

This sounds like a butt hurt millennial that didn’t like their boss telling them what to do. First, there are nearly 1 million people that live in the Omaha metro that disagree. Also only 1/4 of the jobs at UP are in Omaha - the rest are spread out across the country. For the record I grew up in Miami and have lived in L.A., Houston, NLR, Denver and Seattle working for UP. Omaha is one of the best places to live in America. The schools are amazing and it’s a great pace of life. CSX is based in Jacksonville, FL where everyone wants to live - and they have the same situation.

That director you speak about has 30 years of experience. Everyone thinks they are going to be a VP because of their degree - maybe you should work for it - you might actually learn something along the way!

Hope you enjoy hating every job you have in your life with your “it’s all about me” attitude

Having something by your name doesn’t make you a better leader. I’d want the guy that knows the job and how it done before I’d take someone with something by his name who has no idea
