Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Resons for leaving?

What are your reasons for leaving Cisco? I see more and more people leaving each day and I'm honestly interested to know what was it that pushed you to make that final decision.

My biggest issue is lack of job security, but I'm well aware that no other place in this industry is any better, so that's not enough to push me out.

So why are you leaving?

i was stuck with a dull incompetent management chain that could neither get me good work (actually there is no good work in that whole BU) or help me in career progression. on top of that weekly threats to 'do more triages' because our test team had haemorrhaged and could no longer debug anything in large testbeds which the departed gods had setup.

very easy decision.

That's an easy answer: job insecurity, manager that didn't give a sh-- about his reports, being asked to do more with less resource (keep a dying product afloat while engineering resource was hemorrhaged away) support a strategy shift that blatantly broke promises to customers... not to mention the 'fun' of trying to get sh-- done in a company where no one wants to say 'yes, it's me, I can do this' but would rather say 'no, not me, find someone else'. Yeah, tough decision, only thing I can't explain is why I didn't leave earlier.

CX has become a joke since new evp took over. Moving US work to mex for cheaper labor is the only vision left, clueless sr mgmt, corrupt directors, poor pay, forcing v2mom down peoples' throats, lack of vision, ccie being stopped in rtp and sj, sj buildings sold out.

There are hundred reasons to leave, zero to stay.

I saw nothing around me which suggested the work environment would become less toxic with time, rather than more.

Life's too short.

The short sighted dishonest management, who would sacrifice employees and/or customers to get their bonus.

It was the toxic environment that made me leave in the end. I was in a fairly senior role and got visibility of how things worked in the senior ranks and it wasn’t pretty.

I’ll never understand why a talented SE would stay at Cisco. Not that many do.

Friend of mine left a steady, secure and well paying job in the last few months to join Cisco since he seems to worship them from the outside. I wonder how long it will take for his opinion to change on it and wish he didn't make the move.

My manager seemed constantly worried about his job security. It made working a daily nightmare.

Poor management and organizational structure. Just toxic. I’ve gone from being a middle level SE to an industry recognized SME and I cannot get a promotion or even a non-trivial bump in salary.

Have to say I really enjoyed my time at Cisco, but I was still a couple years away from being promoted to a manager level role, and was getting tired of the macro environment at Cisco (no assumed cost of living increases, very tight budgets and the like). Though there were pockets of deep expertise, and plenty of individual exceptions, the quality of talent was definitely spotty. Bottom line, by leaving I got an additional 35k in comp, which is more than I could have expected and I’m at a company that is growing every year, which makes it easier to advance (swimming with the stream instead of against it).

Bad managers. Too many PowerPoint managers were promoted when the stock was down and pay rises were scarce
