Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Any concrete info on potential new layoffs?

I can never be to careful after the layoffs. I’m always anticipating a new wave and I was never in a state where I could be calm ever since. It would be helpful if I heard that no one has heard any rumors regarding layoffs in the making, although I doubt I will get that answer.

You don’t have to be an “IT” person to know how to use a computer. So here you go, I’ll post it one more time and anxiously await you getting walked out!

Damn IT people need to go. They all think they work for an IT company and are not actually part of the automotive industry. So they live their lives like the IT industry rejects they are playing ping pong and foozball instead of doing any real work.

Can you post that one more time?

I want to burn into my memory what someone who doesn't know how to use a computer looks like.

3dlg - Nexteer is Chinese owned company

Oh boy. Here we go again. If they let a bunch more people go I wonder what the younger workers there may think. Job Security is false, so make the money while you can I imagine. I can see some forced retirements. I can see some jobs for regular gas and diesel engines being eliminated. Same for Hydrogen development which is probably more difficult to get to market than Electric Cars and Trucks.

I think Electric Vehicles will be developed in the US but the parts made offshore unless the Trade Talks state otherwise. If they take a turn for the worst, then the timing could be drastically altered. Nexteer in Saginaw is cutting too, so maybe the entire auto industry is tanking for another cycle, so in 4 years or more it may pick up again. Who Knows!

The Self Driving products will continue to be developed, so there are going to be jobs retained in the components section, maybe even in the Car-Cybersecurity portion of the work force, but these developers will become more mobile and move from car maker to car maker just like the Chip Makers were doing to the Micro Electronics Industry in the late 80's and 90's. If you could say Vapor Deposition a recruiter would hire you away from another company with a big fat pay raise.

The Michigan economy will take a beating!

I can confirm the hiring market is getting rough right now. You can't be a one trick pony to maximize your odds. Only the exceptional will be picked up and offered an opportunity, and for everyone it's a hiring freeze.

The economy is changing. The pendulum is swinging the other way.

Good luck finding another job if they let you go. I was recently told by a recruiter that I was a "slam dunk" for a position, however, I was rejected because they wanted someone younger. Bad to worse another company indicated "we would prefer not to hire General Motors employees".

I've heard info from another disgruntled director that IT will be starting the next round of layoffs in August. NEVER EVER trust Mary B to keep her word that there would be no other layoffs coming this year.

I have confirmation from a director that the next round is planned for q3. All directors were forced to sign an NDA, but this source doesn't give a sh*t and is just bidding his time until GM gets rid of Mott&Co.

Have they officially made announcement of more layoffs ? Socrates ? How do you know this is happening in August September?

GM is a dinosaur. A company that is far past its lifeline. It's dead, fattened, bureaucratic, political and made up of a bunch of whiners and complainers. It's about time this company goes under again. It's a classic example of what not to do with a company.

They may not offer bonus or severance next time around.

The law requires neither.

End of Q3 or Q4 would make sense. At the end of August, they will be done paying everyone’s severance from the beginning of this year. Good time to start another round.

Let this be a lesson to all, I learned years ago not to fall for this bull c-ap consumerism economy. It's expected that we all must buy 'STUFF' to keep it rolling, well that's fine but I'm not going to do it and then lose my job every 2 or 3 years!! It's not worth it, company expects me to buy what we build and then threaten my job. Forget it!! I'm out for number one and if that means put every penny earned in my pocket that's what I'm going to do. Only buying what I need not what I want. The rest of world looks at the USA and probably thinks what in hell are these people doing slaving away at a job buying 5 dollar coffees, 55000 dollar pickup trucks, 200 dollar running shoes, campers, 18000 dollar jet ski, just every dumb thing you can imagine. People don't get it, they lower the interest rates and sellers work backwards from the payment and charge an outrageous price purchase price. Buyers, all they do is shop payment not total price. If they can make the payment they get, they never consider the price or depreciation.
