As far as I can see, all of the big companies in the business are not in a good place right now, and all are going through the same changes and have the same goals for the future like electrification, autonomous driving etc. By that logic, all the positions that have been eliminated due to the changes of the direction of the company is very unlikely to even exist in a competitor company, given that they are letting go the same profile of workers. That being said, is it even worth applying at another car company in the US?

Sure they are. Someone that offers multiple talents on their resume is very valuable. What do I mean?
Are you an engineer with a background in mechanical, electrical, dimensional, etc? It's hard since to become great at one area, neglects the others.
How about a designer? Perhaps a designer that has experience in interiors, exteriors, GD&T, electrical, architectural, or industrial? How about a designer that holds multiple CAD system experience among those disciplines?
You can identify the one trick pony, versus those whom are not. One is significantly more likely to find employment.
What does your skill set offer the world?
You may not be in design but you could get into Quality? Software, Hardware, once that stuff malfunctions or breaks they always need someone from quality to mop up. It's a thankless job but someone needs to do it.
