With all this BS going on, when do you think the merger will take place? With which other RR? CSX or CN?

you’ve never met a manager that loved UP? Have you ever talked to anyone at the Director level or higher? Yes your lower level managers hate the railroad and most quit ASAP. They aren’t the only managers at UP. I’ve also witnessed MRO’s and MOP’s that looked like a kid in a candy store when they were about to go testing.
A merger between Class 1 railroads with the current Congress is probably off the table.
@idi: I've never met a manager (including myself) who "loves" UP. That job had the shortest honeymoon period of any that I've ever had. Like a lot of other managers I took the first offer that matched/exceeded what UP was paying me and got out.
Any class 1 merger has to be approved by Congress and the STB. A UP merger was denied some years ago due to service issues. Any class 1 merger has to show that it's within best business interests. A merger is simply not going to happen, at least not in the foreseeable future. The UP would operate in most of the lower 48, and would have to interchange with shortlines that they have never worked with before. The STB would absolutely scrutinize the operations, before a merger would ever be considered. If the STB found any issues regarding service plans, then it's automatically denied. Yes a merger would seem imminent at this point given current operations. A class 1 acquisition by another class 1 is not as simple as handing over money. People need to relax. People are posting ideas and rumors that have no merit. I'm not surprised that all or most of it is completely centered around PSR.
