Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Always Stay Positive!

I wanted to share my experience to see if maybe it help even one person dealing with the layoffs.

I was laid off in February and I hit the ground running with updating my resume and cover letter. I then applied everywhere almost anywhere. I was not getting any feedback from any of the companies that I wanted to work for. This made me very depressed and angry at myself. This lead to arguments between myself and my spouse, friends and family who just trying to help me. I felt worthless and unwanted and felt like I was never going to get another job.

Finally I accepted their help and feedback on my resume and cover letter. I applied to better suited jobs on Indeed and started getting hits! The past two weeks I have had 8+ phone interviews with jobs at companies I could see myself doing. It's very easy to get down on yourself but you need to stay positive if you are in a similar position like me. I could get an offer soon, I could not, but either way I'm going stay positive and continue applying, networking, and interviewing. Stay Strong out there my laid off and employed friends!

All I can say is diversity. By that I mean offer diversity on your resume. To the individual that is a jack of all trades, you will have a greater opportunity over someone stuck in only one line of your profession.

In the last few months I've had a number of interviews from companies wanting different areas of my experience. It was very interesting and incredibly unique. Not only did it bring competition, but it opened up opportunities that were not available otherwise. Of the multiple offers presented, I settled on one position that paid 35-40% more, than what GM paid. And the benefits, oh the benefits...

One door closes, many more open. But, it does take a little time.

Keep it up man, I was getting depressed not getting very many hits back after applying to a whole lot of jobs, some where I was more or less qualified but all jobs that I was interested in doing. After a long period of nothing I got multiple job offers the same week and am now starting a new job next week which seems like its going to be much more interesting than my former job at GM!

Please modify your resume and cover letter based on different job you apply. Don't use same resume/cover letter for every job application.

If you are above 50, you may think about vague your college graduation date and your first job starting date, or just list your latest 1-2 jobs. Don't let people clearly see your age. Age discrimination is always there.

How's this grab ya , I've been laid off since December 1st , I had just about 18 years in as a contact tech , I had an opportunity to get hired becuse my colleague was retiring , my boss blocked me from leaving the position he had , they Bering in someone else with zero experience , I had almost six years in the position , I got laid off and now he's all alone. Thanks to my boss , if he would have hired me last summer I wouldn't be unemployed. O have also applied everywhere too , I am not an engineer but a tech , it's very for us to find jobs now because the market is tight due to all of this. Almost 18 years I had with GM , wrong place it seems and wrong managers I am lucky to work for. I loved my job and my colleagues , I have never been unemployed in my entire life , if I could move out of state I would.
