Michigan Unemployment benefits need to be extended

Still plugging along applying, etc. but my 40 year old something self needs some luck at this point. Michigan Unemployment benefits need to be extended! They were 26 weeks but appears to be 20 now. I’ve applied to 100+ job postings and went through countless long online applications, have had 3 in person interviews since the first round of contractor lay-offs the end of November. With all the GM furloughs, starting with July shutdown, and before various holidays, the 20 weeks of Michigan unemployment will be exhausted in 😩 a few weeks for me. I know I can’t be the only one out there concerned!? Since GM folks had severance I’m thinking unemployment claims have not moved the needle enough in MI’s % Unemployed... ?? There has to be a higher % for extensions. With that, of course I’d rather be employed but this is where I’m at! Anyone else relate?

1xad- we have a ton of suppliers here too, I wish I could move out of Michigan. It would be nice if we had aerospace and other industry here like Lockheed Martin or other good companies. LinkedIn is such a remarkable tool for making good connections , if you dig deep there are so many jobs not only here in the US but globally , kids out of college should be encouraged to look outside the US , if I had a do over that's exactly what I'd be doing. I pray for all of you and these very talented young adults fresh out of school , Michigan deserves better and more than just Automotive. Take a hard look at the city of Detroit , Flint and other industrialized areas , now Lordstown Ohio . GM has absolutely zero interest in making this country prosper and healthy but instead the CEO points fingers and takes no accountability , this is not a progression forward but a same old same old GM. Mass hirings five years ago today , mass firings ! So like this brilliant CEO didn't know five years ago that GM should be smaller and then allows massive hiring? WTF man. All this cute diversity sh-- is to mask what is really happening , a distraction to the people to further the greed machine. I have had the pleasure of working with folks all over the world and walks of life we are professionals , we don't need some suite sitting up at the top preaching her views and so called culture on us , the real problem is Marry , maybe start with her first and not the people that carry out day to day tasks for GM , she is playing a psychological game of manipulation like all managers do , pure narsassist. Her pockets are lined , overflowing with cash from a company that is making profits. Perfect scam and the poor laid off folk pay the ultimate price.

Michigan is too auto-dependent.

It may be time to consider Exiting the state :\

There are no "hidden benefits" that the workforce office doesn't know about.

I was contract let go in November. I noticed some comments from GM employees about the WARN act. I’m curious whether any workforce free training is available or extended benefits. The workforce location I went to seemed useless wirh little help.

Wondering how Starbuck’s is doing and if there are still long lines at the GM VEC for their $5 fancy drinks.

I had my luck reaching out to recruiter of company via LinkedIn in with message. Try to get around hrscreeners and walk into small businesses that work in your field. That's how sales people do it for a reason. Hard still but gets you to the front of line. Good luck

We are likely heading into the next recession so I expect hiring to get worse as the year goes on.

GM has always treated contractors as second class citizens. By that I mean not necessarily in people relationships, but in earning a livelihood. Holidays in which contract houses don't recognize, but because GM is off, you must be off. Furlough July, December, Easter, Thanksgiving week, and any other time they just feel like it. By the end of the year, you are earning based upon about 10 months per year, and not earning for two. Any vcation time you might earn, has to be used just to salvage a partial paycheck when you don't work.

So with the unemployment deal, GM does it again. Not only do they layoff during Christmas, no companies hire for the next 2-3 months of the new year, essentially screwing every contractor. This coupled with ONLY five months of unemployment, makes finding a job extremely urgent and time sensitive. The new unemployment policies in place, are micromanagement magnified. There's so many more actions than in its prior existence from years ago.

Job hunting is a major pain. From application to interview, to job offer can take months. Companies are paranoid to find that ideal candidate, and never move quickly. If you lack a specific qualification, like a degree, expect to be excluded and filtered out almost right away. Even if you have decades of experience, you are no longer qualified. You can see the shift in the world, and it's not for the better. We are letting the everyone gets a trophy kids run the world.

What I have learned from decades at GM, is to save up your money for a rainy day. With this company, they are always, always, always guaranteed. You should have a minimum of one year saved as a layoff fund, and I'm very serious about that.

Good luck in your search. You are not alone. I anticipate there are many in the same boat as you find yourself today.

Only a hiring freeze if you're over 40

I'm in the exact same position as you are , laid off since December 1st , I was at GPS in Pontiac for a very long time and from what I understand they still have no plan as to what and or when they are moving to Warren , this is absolutely brutal. I was told that there is a hiring freeze and then I hear that there isn't ? It's maddening , just like you I'd like to go back to work ASAP ,
