Thread regarding Fry's Electronics layoffs

Fry's has to close in 2019.

With the constant 20% off coupons, and bare shelves, Fry's has to be circling the drain. The number of computer and monitors has been decreased so much, that one can only wonder why. Their creditors must not be extending them credit. Maybe all of their sales now are purely a cash grab.

I really wish I was wrong about this, but the writing has to be on the walls.

I went into the Fry's in Illinois last night and was shocked to see the store so barren. I wanted to pick up a new pair of speakers for my computer at home and they literally had no speakers. After I looked around it became evident that something was terribly wrong. Empty shelves, no customers, and a very lifeless feel. Over the years I have shopped both Fry's and Micro Center. Looks like it will be Micro Center going forward.

The one in San Marcos, CA was nearly empty in the middle of December. Can't imagine that they can recover from that.

Frys in Las Vegas is looking horrible as well.I dont see how much longer they can last. For everyone in Vegas, theres another place called PC Warehouse located in Henderson. They have a website and you can buy a ton of things. While it doesnt to appear to be on the level of the old Frys, they cant be beat concerning buying PC parts in Vegas now.......

Tried to buy a motherboard/CPU bundle at their Sunnyvale store today (2/11/20) only to discover that they only had four (as in, 4) mobos and two (as in 2) CPUs available for sale, none of which were compatible. Sales guy said he couldn't get me working parts at any store or their catalog shipped to my house or any store and told me to go elsewhere. This would be like if I walked into an auto parts store and they didn't sell ANY universal alternators or batteries.

Stores can't survive in this fashion. The real question now is if they'll even make it to July or die before then.

Industrial mega-developer eyes Fry’s north San Jose site
Prologis takes strong interest in Fry’s Electronics site in San Jose

SAN JOSE — The world’s largest developer of industrial real estate has taken a formal interest in the vast Fry’s Electronics property in north San Jose.

Prologis, a behemoth developer of industrial properties such as warehouse and logistics buildings, has taken an active interest in the choice Fry’s property, located on nearly 20 acres at 550 E. Brokaw Road near Interstate 880 in north San Jose.

The interest in the big Fry’s Electronics site in San Jose on the part of Prologis, which has $111 billion worth of properties under management, has come to light through multiple public documents on file at San Jose City Hall.

The 19.7-acre site is at the corner of East Brokaw Road and Junction Avenue and also has frontage alongside an onramp to Interstate 880.

The spacious property at 600 E. Brokaw Road contains a big Fry’s Electronics store with a Mayan theme, along with the corporate headquarters of the consumer electronics retailer, as well as the offices for a defunct Arena Football League team, the San Jose Sabercats.

The property owner, according to Santa Clara County documents, is Caracol Ltd., whose main offices are located at 600 E. Brokaw Road. David Fry, a Fry’s Electronics executive, is the general partner for Caracol, according to the California Secretary of State’s Office.

Prologis is seeking to change the zoning for the property, San Jose city documents show.

The current zoning is “planned development zoning” and Prologis has filed an application to change the zoning to “combined industrial and commercial,” according to public documents.

“There are a lot of things that could be allowed with the new zoning,” said Alec Atienza, a San Jose city planner, when asked what sort of development could be pursued on the site were the city to approve a change to the combined commercial and industrial designation.

At some point in late 2019, Prologis met with city officials to make preliminary inquiries about the 19.7-acre site, city records show.

“Their question was only about existing parking requirements and if they could subdivide the existing lot,” John Tu, a San Jose city planner, said of the Prologis inquiries.

The lot is large enough that it could be possible to construct a new building on the property because a huge chunk of the site is devoted to a surface parking lot.

Fry’s declined to comment about the city meetings or the Prologis involvement in a potential redevelopment of the property. Prologis said it didn’t want to discuss the situation.

Prologis has taken an active interest in the choice north San Jose property at a challenging time for Fry’s.

Fry’s has been forced to confront widening challenges during a retail apocalypse that has drastically altered how people shop for an array of goods, including consumer electronics products.

The retailer recently shuttered its Palo Alto store. Fry’s says it intends to remain in business. However, the company’s store shelves have been sparsely stocked in recent months, including during the just-concluded Christmas shopping season.

Fry’s Electronics is a tenant at numerous store sites. However, through the Caracol Ltd. affiliate, the Fry’s family is the principal owner of the East Brokaw property in San Jose.

That ownership situation gives Fry’s executives more flexibility were they to choose to work with a big developer such as Prologis regarding future uses of the north San Jose site.
“Prologis hasn’t made any development proposals,” Atienza, the city planner said. “We don’t know what they want with the proposal to change the zoning.”

It seems that Fry's is quietly trying to sell the big location in San Jose with the "Mayan" theme... ...and it's corporate HQ. (San Jose Mercury won't let you view it in private/incognito mode without a subscription.) The potential buyer, Prologis, has already filed to change the zoning. "Fry’s declined to comment about the city meetings or the Prologis involvement in a potential redevelopment of the property. Prologis said it didn’t want to discuss the situation."

If Fry's will continue on as is the thought shared by some here then explain how a retail chain stays healthy financially by keeping expensive shelves bare of goods? I was just in the Roseville, CA store last weekend to use a gift card I got for XMas. Bought a lot of Starbucks double shot expressos in the can and some beef jerky...not exactly what I was planning on getting going in. So now I cross them off the list and will just spend more through Amazon. I know I am not alone there.

Really it takes around a month to get the product from China. - 2 weeks on a boat and another 2 weeks to clear customs. Plus a highly doubt that they get anything directly from China. They get their stuff from vendors located in the US who should already have stock. Plus the trade war hasn't ended the tariffs on electronics items still is in place.

Frys employees are now saying they are out of stock because of the Coronavirus. Just when the trade war stock problem was over they get hit with this. Bummer. Frys just can't catch a break.

There's an interesting video on You Tube. Some guy in Burbank checked out his local Fry's and found it dead as expected. He heard the rumor that the Las Vegas store was fully stocked, and proceeded to fly directly there. While it looked fully stocked at first glance, checking out further there were simply more items, and actual selection was just as lacking.

If the rumor is true that they are holding payment from vendors until they sign the consignment paperwork, why would any vendor go that way? If they can't pay for things that they got months or years go that obvious have sold since they have no stock what makes people (vendors) think that they can pay as they sell. Right now they have nothing to sell. Selling a $5 off brand unknown HDMI cable that cost them probably $2-$3 there is no way they can pay for that and still pay "Billy", utilities etc. Wondering if they are also stiffing the CDTFA and other states since 4th qtr Sales tax is due at the end of the month. though since they haven't had anything to sell their payment should be pretty small.

Fry’s staying open? Lol
It’s like a husband that’s begging his wife to give him another chance but she’s already shagging a guy she met at the gym. It’s just like those situations when you see a married couple and you know its over but the Husband hasn’t figured it out yet.

In situations where the end is near, people always say they’re going to change but the shoe eventually drops. Merchandisers know this and that’s why Fry’s hasn’t been able to make this consignment model work yet. No one trusts them. Would you trust Fry’s if you were a merchandiser? Hell the spokesman has already lied by omitting the Duluth store closure.

Just got back to Reno after stopping by the Roseville CA store. Most of the shelves are emptier than a h–ker's Hope Chest, same as when I was there in November 2019.

Not looking too good IMHO.

That’s just the dumbest move they’ve made so far. Whomever in management came up with that idea of going to a consignment model should be fired then shot!
Fry’s was famous for just about anything and everything to any Information Technology professional, from the a simple CAT-5 cable or RJ-45, to having everything you could possibly need to build a workstation, server or gaming machine and that’s just one aspect. They were THE store to go to, now they turned into a store to stay away from.

I looked at Fry's Burbank and Woodland Hills and they didn't have enough inventory to build a PC. No motherboards and they only have ONE cpu. They have ZERO gpus in stock.

I then looked at Best Buy and they had tons of components to put a computer together, including gpus and their prices were competitive with Amazon.

Oh my goodness. Fry's is so pathetic.

I read the Facebook post and Fry’s said they have a long way to go with their consignment model. But looking at the pictures, I assume the brown boxes are refurbished parts.

In the past I’ve seen companies say f’it and pull the plug right as they are trying something new. So if they do close on Jan 20th or whenever, I won’t be surprised.

I remember when I built my first PC 11 years ago and I was on the fence between a q9550 and the i7-920. The old Asian guy in the component department said the lga1366 platform was better for the future and boy was he right. That system is still running but now I have the w3690.

Most of the stores are empty, it a matter of time before they close and Tigerdirect buys them (it happen to CompUSA). I was recently at the San Jose store and it was a ghost town inside; they told me the same about them restocking shelves.

Theres a company throughout Texas called Altex Computers & Electronics. They are better then Frys ever was. They don't carry appliances and cologne, like Frys. They carry Computers and electronic stuff only. And the employees actually have real IT knowledge. Go in to one of these stores and you'll see how retail is supposed to be done. www.altex.com

Unless Fry's has miracle up their sleeves their store stores are dead. I was at the Palo Alto, CA store before it close to see empty selves. This weekend I visited the Sacramento store to see the same thing. What a shame. Fry's is the unspoken hero, like DIGITAL, of today's computer age.

I went to the Concord, CA Fry's store to purchase a power cord on January 6, 2020. Wow was I was shocked. Bare shelves and maybe 4-6 employees working. I asked if they were closing. I was told no, they were just 'wiped out from the holidays.' I don't think so, 80% of their merchandise is gone, and what was left appeared to be marked up a bit. Very disappointed to see Fry's go. They were our go-to place for parts, and all things IT. (We own an IT company) I guess we will have to order from Amazon. Thank you, Fry's, for all your years of operations and for providing a great resource.

“Dammit. My parents got me a $500 gift card to this place and there’s not a damn thing I can spend it on. Do you think they’ll give me cash back on this gift card??“

No you wont get cash back, but you can try ordering online which could garner access to more stores and thus more product options.

Failing that, look to see if they sell any gift cards or loadable visas to transfer it to. Could also attempt to sell it at a loss like $500 gift card for $400 cash. Just some suggestions.
