Thread regarding Fry's Electronics layoffs

Fry's has to close in 2019.

With the constant 20% off coupons, and bare shelves, Fry's has to be circling the drain. The number of computer and monitors has been decreased so much, that one can only wonder why. Their creditors must not be extending them credit. Maybe all of their sales now are purely a cash grab.

I really wish I was wrong about this, but the writing has to be on the walls.

@YbiPZw8-4Gglu What you are probably seeing is the stock and signage from Palo Alto which closed on Dec 27th being moved to San Jose.

It's the only big store that used to sell components. If its inventory goes down, that affects a lot of people. If you dont like people gossiping about your store in their free time, get a hobby. You can say the same thing to me but what else am I gunna do between building computers and breeding competitive pokemon? Call my mom every 20 minutes? Let's be real here.

Dammit. My parents got me a $500 gift card to this place and there’s not a damn thing I can spend it on. Do you think they’ll give me cash back on this gift card??

Fry's Brokaw Saturday 4th January. Inventory trickling in, batteries and quite a few blue tooth speakers. New digital signage by speakers and headphone sections. I came, I saw, I left with my bargain storage case.

Okay, so Fry's near you put up a "store closing sign". Where is this store? Without the facts, your post is meaningless and useless. 58

Writing a 7 page resume is extremely ignorant advice. Thats about 5 pages no one would bother to read, and only shows you don't know how to concise your history, your bloating your work history on purpose, or your a job jumper and have just that many jobs.

If your going to defend your company at least give realistic advice in your passive aggressive post. 99% of all posters are obviously actual disappointed customers so your post makes no sense as well targeting current/past employees.

I went in the Campbell, CA store the first week of Nov. There were no other customers visible. The first quadrant of the store was filled with random junk, probably junk they picked up from a liquidator. There was an entire aisle (both sides) of portable evaporative air conditioners....same model. Not really a big seller in November. The next aisle had a bunch of "as seen on TV" garbage that had nothing to do with electronics. Another aisle had some other random garbage. Then there was aisle after aisle of emptiness. The signage above the aisles was a mere ghost of what used to grace the shelves. I finally had to ask where to find an HDMI cable. I was sent to an aisle whose sign made no reference to anything even close to cables. Every cord, cable, adapter, fitting, outlet, for every possible application was condensed to a 10 ft long patch of mostly empty pegboard hangers. What I saw used to cover a few aisles. I was puzzled why they would have centered the remnants of merchandise in the aisle, causing me to walk past 50 ft of nothingness on both sides. I thought it would be less obvious and more convenient if they'd stocked it near the front of the aisle. They had 1 option for an HDMI cord (I think Walgreens has more than that). I headed toward Impulse Buy Alley (the queue) and got to the registers without having to pause for anybody ahead of me because I was the only customer in the whole store at 6pm on a weeknight. I walked straight up to the completely empty counter, looking for a cashier, and there were none. I looked at my watch to see if the store had closed while I was there for 8 minutes, but I missed the announcement. I called out for help and a woman who clearly didn't want to be there schlumped her way to the register, never looking up at me once. I tried to make small talk, but was being ignored. She didn't even tell me my total. I ran my credit card, and she hand me my receipt without looking up. I thanked her and wished her a good evening....crickets. I got to my car and opened the package for the cable box I had just picked up at Comcast and realized there was already an HDMI cord in it. (There wasn't supposed to be, but the guy hooked me up). I was tempted to walk back into Frys to get my $8 back, but just couldn't be bothered.

vacuum shock at Manhattan Beach Fry's (CA). my heart sank! no. not frys too!!!
asked if they were closing: one of the only 3 clerks left got p-ss-d off "everyone is asking me that! very disrespectful asking a man if he is losing his job" I felt for the man.
One of the 4 customers starng at the empty shelves threw a life-line comment " I heard that they are moving across the street to El Segundo (cheaper city taxes). I felt relieved (still skeptical of course)

They are still selling online - they must be changing the business model to the Tiger Electronics'

America is NOT greater any more.!

Fry's on NW Highway in Dallas also nearly empty. They have these MASSIVE shelves in the "back" that you can clearly see because they're so high, that have no stock on them. I was also fed the BS.. "We're negotiating with new vendors", and "Black Friday cleaned us out but we'll be restocked soon". Yeah.. who leaves their store completely empty through the Christmas season? If the other stories aren't lies, that alone is a shocking business decision. RIP Fry's.

I visited the Downer's Grove, IL store last week, December 12th and was totally depressed of what I saw. Entire sections with no no product and few products hanging from the shelves. I had a list of several items that I saw from the website that I wanted to check out and was disappointed that none were in stock and told to order from the website. Very few computer and monitors or printers, and computer parts and components were a joke and I left only purchasing a $5.00 HDMI cable. What the Hell happened to this company?

So a couple months ago, the Austin TX Frys had a computer department still... sparse but they had gotten some machines in and there were desktops and notebooks on display.
Now...
NOTHING.
They could probably pack everything left in the store in 2 trailers; maybe 1 if they didn't have so many of those large outdoor speaker systems left in stock.
There were like 10 people working.
So, it is kind/generous of Frys' owners to keep people employed for an empty store, but it is OBVIOUS there's no turnaround here.
Expenses MUST be larger than revenue.
A privately owned company doesn't have to tell its secrets though... so I guess we watch.

Just left the Tempe Frys Electronics.
Maybe all of 200 DVDs, no laptops, no desktops, a very few desktop cases, no motherboards, no ram, few cables, a few gaming/computer chairs, few appliances.

Even the "as seen on TV" section was thin.

Limited selection, but numerous ps4 games, few xbox games, no instruments.

Just a very, very sad and depressing feeling store.

They didn't have anything I was looking for

How I know Fry's is closing is that I had to check my own bag and mark my receipt myself as I was leaving the Roseville store yesterday. Visited the Sacramento store today which is almost empty as well. Years ago I adopted a saying because of their c-appy customer service: "never buy anything at Fry's that you are not willing to throw away". Kinda sad to see them go however.

Went into the San Marcos, CA store on the 27th. Parking lot was pretty empty. I thought they might be closed for the holiday, then saw someone go in, so I followed. I was dumbstruck by the empty shelves, the lights were maybe 60% on, one employee for the entire computer/network area (basically the right side of the store), no computers, very few appliances, empty isles of shelves, empty areas where isles had been, only a couple of registers open. All of the candy that was usually down the entire checkout line (where there was usually a long wait) was gone. Was told the same changing vendors story seen here in other posts. Put a fork in Fry's, it's DONE.

Expected, but still sad. I live in walking distance from this location and now that it's gone, Fry's is basically dead to me, since I don't want to drive to Sunnyvale or San Jose just to get what I can order from Amazon. In the past year, I've gone from 3 or 4 visits a week to never, basically. Everything worthwhile was gone months ago.

Like another poster, I was in the Willsonville, OR Fry's (the only one in my state) on 12/22/19, three days before Christmas, mid afternoon, and was shocked at how barren the store shelves were. Some shelves had been pulled way back from the outer perimeter walls (why is there so much empty floor space over there?), most others averaged only 50% of the merchandise they could have held. There were maybe 20 people shopping, and maybe 10 employees in the entire store, so it wasn't really under staffed for the few people that were there. I went in to buy a digital photo frame for my mom and walked around for more than an hour looking for anything else I might like, since they can't be long for this earth. Bottom line - the stuff that is left is everything that was overpriced to begin with and hasn't sold for 2+ years so it is all mostly outdated merchandise with no deals to be had. I haven't seen stores this empty since GI Joe's and Kmart went out of business.

Just came back from Fry’s in Alpharetta, GA. Christmas Eve and it looks like a GOoB sale. Very thinly stocked. I came here looking for reports of their demise. I used to go to that store and it was packed and chaos this time of year.

I was in the Roseville, CA store - a total waste land, the place was basically empty, I've know the Fry's (Randy & David) for over 30 years and participated in their success as a vendor, really sad!

Just left Plano Fry's, same story as others below. We used to love walking along the aisle that had dozens of PC cases, just to look at them: gone. The motherboards area, gone. The Apple section, emptied. All the hard disk drives and cloud drives are gone. I always hated the PC salespeople trying to corner me for a sale, but it was sad: no one at the PC tables, most of which were empty, as if someone had broken in and stolen everything. Empty wireless router shelves.

We have a fun tradition of eating in the overpriced cafe: but it was emptier than usual and they had someone in there who did not know how to get things together to make us sandwiches. Board game shelves, empty. Very few DVD's, even. No background music, one single checkout person, no one in the customer service area, no exit receipt-checker. Still plenty of resistors and capacitors, though! Some Raspberry Pi cases and small robotics parts. UPS's gone. Almost no mice.

Like others, I remember the long lines, the full registers (a year or two back they opened up a whole extra row of registers during Christmas), the music and stocked shelves. A sad ending, if indeed this is the end for them.

I went to Wilsonville, OR's Fry's yesterday. Drove about 20 miles to get there expecting no parking and long lines yesterday (12/22/19) since I was not going to get there until around 11:00 AM. The parking lot was so empty I thought they had closed but saw someone go inside. Once inside I counted 8 customers not including my wife and I. There was so much empty space that I asked the first employee if they were closing. They said no but the look in his face said other wise. I heard two other of the customers during my brief stay ask the same thing. You could have put all the merchandise they had into less than 1/4th of the stores floor and still not be crowded. Went to purchase some appliances but decided to go elsewhere, nothing really to compare or choose from here. Sad...……...

I came to the Fountain Valley store Dec 22 expecting a crowd and no parking spaces. There are about 20 cars in the parking lot and similar to what other people are posting, shelves ridiculously empty and no feeling of Christmas at all. I asked and was told they are switching vendors, doesn’t make sense. I’m also afraid to purchase anything for fear they will be gone. Have to watch for the announcement and come back one mire time for the fire sale.

Just got back from the Anaheim Frys this morning (the Sunday B4 Xmas) and it was depressingly empty of product, customers and employees. However, it was less depressing than my visit to the Fountain Valley location two weeks ago. Anaheim seems to have a little more product than FV, but nothing like what they used to stock. I'll be sad to see them go. .. I can't see them recovering from whatever they're currently suffering from.

was in the Phoenix store yesterday... it's really creepy seeing only one cashier. she tried telling me they are re-negotiating with their vendor, but i wasn't buying that as part Of my transaction. I think that's just the cover story because who wants to buy something that can't be returned in 30 days.

Just went into the Woodland Hills store today. WOW. Pretty much empty. Hardly anybody working there and maybe three customers in the whole place including me. I used to get so excited going in there back when I used to build my own PCs and they had anything and everything you could want to do it. Back when, this time of year, a week before Christmas you couldn't even find a parking spot in their massive parking lot! They would have five people working in the computer parts section and you had to wait in line to get to one of them. I guess like a lot of stores the internet and Amazon pretty much k–led them. I'm sure Best Buy won't be around too much longer either and they never had anything like the selection at Frys anyway. Ten years from now Costco will probably be done too....

The Future: Everyone lying in a recliner with a food hose going into mouth and a collection hose on the other end. A "hyper resolution reality" monitor to stare into mounted in front of you and disability and basic income checks automatically deposited to pay the food pipe and power bills.

Visited the San Marcos store....sad. At first I thought there was some damage from the recent rains and that's why the shelves were so bare, but it would seem to be the death knell.

I loved/hated the early 2000's Fry's shopping experiences at the San Diego store (they took over a "Incredible Universe" location...even kept the delivery trucks!). It was the place to go for all things tech for so many years.

You dreaded having to return anything to the store due to the lines and waiting for the "supervisor" to approve every scrutinized product, but at least they gave you generous 30 day return policy.

There were so many checkout registers, and they needed them, including the person who's job it was to tell you which one to go to ("number 12......number 4.....number 32..."). I also loved the computer techs in lab coats...to give the impression of competency. The shrink wrap avoidance technique was practiced by all, except for items that they kept up front in the "cage"!

I still get the ad emails from them, and I am tempted to by a new TV soon (I prefer to buy items like that in person), but I'm concerned that if they go out of business I won't be able to have the 30 day return if something is wrong with it. The return policy is good insurance, and a reason I've bought so much stuff from them over the years. Does anyone know what happens in this scenario? Would my credit card company bail me out or make me jump through manufacturer warranty hoops?

Just stop by the wilsonville store here in Oregon. Been going here for years. Always love being able to go get something when I need it same day instead of having to wait for internet orders etc. It's a complete ghost town. No security, nothing on the shelves.... I was here a few weeks ago and it's probably two to three times more empty now than it was then. same BS about restocking and vendors as they told me last time. I'm certainly not going to get any Christmas shopping done here unless I plan on buying beverages from the coolers. Fortunately, as ironic as it may be, they did have the screen protector I came in for. I certainly hope that when Fry's disappears something equally qualified takes its place as there wasn't really any other competitive store with as good of a stock in the area at all. Especially if you need a resistor or some random component. Like you used to be able to buy at Tandy I mean Radio Shack. Dating myself now lol

Wow...I thought it was just here in Phoenix. I went to the Phoenix Fry's and the salesperson on the floor told me the same thing I have been seeing on this forum, "changing vendors." I needed a new hard drive to re-install my OS since I had picked up a bad virus on my existing hard drive and there wasn't one to be found anywhere in the store. No ink to refill cartridges, nothing. This store was easily only 40% stocked (a liberal estimate). I decided to take a trip to the Tempe Fry's but, lo and behold, the exact same story. The store was almost empty. The K-Mart down the street from me that closed a few months ago didn't look as bad as these stores do. And as it's been noted, they're this understocked right before Christmas?!! Oh well, hope the employees get out before the hammer actually comes down. (I picked up the hard drive from Amazon BTW!)

I just came back from the Oxnard store. The parking lot was empty. I saw plenty of empty shelves. There was only one cashier. All other registers closed. The whole store was quiet. No music playing. I found an associate and he asked me if he could help me find anything. I told him that this will be difficult since there’s almost no inventor he left. I asked him if they’re going out of business. He said that they’re not going out of business they’re staying open. I couldn’t resist to ask why he thinks so was half the store empty and nobody working there one week before Christmas. He just shrugged. I also ask the security guard at the door. He said nobody is telling them anything. It looks like they will be done by the end of this year.
