Thread regarding Fry's Electronics layoffs

Fry's has to close in 2019.

With the constant 20% off coupons, and bare shelves, Fry's has to be circling the drain. The number of computer and monitors has been decreased so much, that one can only wonder why. Their creditors must not be extending them credit. Maybe all of their sales now are purely a cash grab.

I really wish I was wrong about this, but the writing has to be on the walls.

Frys in Dallas. Parking lot empty. Maybe a dozen or fewer employees. Shelves bare. I asked. “No, were not closing. “
Heck, they won’t even be able to pay their light bill. I think they’re toast.

Just returned from the Sunnyvale one, looking for printer ink, and, as I haven't been to one it quite a while, was shocked at all the empty shelves...... Row after row of empty shelves. And, where there was stock, there was only a handful of items on an entire row. What a sad ending, considering how BUSY it used to be over the past 30 years or so......

"My prediction: All Fry’s locations except for the one that is closest to the Fry’s family will close its doors with no warning this Wednesday. When Black Friday comes, management will be told to not unlock the doors and then given their severance pay."

The more I think about it, this makes sense. Why are these properties just sitting there?

Something's up, gonna be nasty.

Went to the Sacramento store today to check out TVs before Black Friday to be shocked that no merchandise was on the floor. Also noted there were 2 cashiers but there was no line. Hope this is not the end of a place with so many great deals over the years. Shelves were extremely bare and employees had a smile but with a major shopping day for retailers it’s not looking good for them. At least I got my final hurrah today.

My prediction: All Fry’s locations except for the one that is closest to the Fry’s family will close its doors with no warning this Wednesday. When “Black Friday” comes, management will be told to not unlock the doors and then given their severance pay. Meanwhile, the few employees that are left will come to clock in to see a sign on the doors to go home. All stock that is inside will be abandoned. The property managers will catch wind of this by noon, and start calling their lawyers. Once all the short term legal stuff is done (perhaps in January or later) the property management companies will remove all stock, fixtures, etc. and sell it to the highest bidder to help make up for the loss.

Sunnyvale is a ghost town (11/25) went there for HDMI cables - Did find 2 whole rows of them, never heard of the brand - what company doesn't but their address on things. over heard a family looking for a mouse - there were told aisle 31 when they asked about the empty shelves they were told by two employees that it was because it was the end of the year, the employees laughed as they walked off. The poor family headed off to aisle 31 I just shook my head knowing that there are no mice on aisle 31 and only one keyboard.

Went to the Fry's in Concord, CA today. It was worse than my last visit. More shelves were empty. The remaining laptops were now on a long table instead of the section that the were previously in. There were still TVs but not nearly as many as was the previous norm. The DVD/Blu-ray section might as well have not existed. A lot of what was there was pure garbage. The "As Seen on TV" section had more merchandise than the electronics sections. There were only two cashiers and only one had a customer. There was a definite "smell" of a store in a death spiral. On the way out I asked the employee at the door about the increasingly empty sections and how long the store could hold on. He said that it wasn't closing and that, incredulously, the plan was for a major merchandise restocking to done by Black Friday. When I questioned how this was possible, he said nothing but the look on his face said that he knew this was company BS. I wished him luck and left never to return.

Tarrifs was the old company line. That was the update from 'we are restocking in 4-6weeks'. The current company line is 'we are going to a consignment model so we can be like Wal-Mart'

That's why they have only bottled water and asseenontv stuff. Nobody supplier is going to stock the store with high end TV's and video cards that get locked inside the store when they go out of business having not been paid.

Went to a ghost town today (Fry's – Austin TX)
Was told about a month ago by employee that TARIFFS had something to do with it. But I know BS when I hear it.

No other stores look like Fry's, tariffs notwithstanding.

They're gone.

I'm having difficulty understanding how Micro Center could fill the void this will leave but surely there's enough business there to justify it.

It appears this happened to Fry's not because of the market but because someone got greedy.

I was at the Sacramento store last weekend for some parts... was shocked at how little the store had, compared to how I remember it as a kid. Hoping Micro Center picks up whatever is left of the chain after its inevitable liquidation.

Sad to say the Burbank, CA store is mostly empty shelves. Their TV department and Bluetooth headphones is somewhat stocked but the rest of the departments are empty isles. On numerous accessions I spoke with different employees and all of them have said that they are remodeling/relocating the departments. There are only 3 cashiers working and maybe 4 customers in line. Before there would be 15 cashiers working and the line would be stretch out to the isles and almost out the entrance. The first time I saw the line with only a few people waiting is when I started wondering if they were closing down (7-8 months ago). :( smh

I worked St the Woodland Hills, CA store many years ago. Being a computer geek, I always loved shopping there. I went there about a month ago to get a replacement cpu fan for my PC and there was no selection, more than half the shelf was empty. I thought they might be remodeling or moving inventory, but there was no notice as to what was going on. It's sad, because as convenient it is to shop online, I still like to occasionally get things right away or just walk down the aisles; I might even buy something I didn't plan on.

The City of Industry store is a sad ghost town, I will never go back. Some obvious facts:
1) They have lost all of their suppliers due to credit issues.
2) Running a "consignment" business in low-margin electronics is a joke, not even a good cover story.

They're done. Limping through the end of the year, probably for tax purposes and/or lease issues.

(1) Ordered a laser printer online last Thursday. The fulfillment center in Sunnyvale called at the end of the day to say they were cancelling the order due to lack of inventory. Website still says they have it in stock. (2) Asked the clerk in the motherboard section in San Diego yesterday how long before they close. He would not admit they are closing: "just temporary low inventory". Wow! Not sure why they bothered putting out buckets all over the store to catch the rain leaks.

Sears went through a period where everything on the shelves was refurbished.

Something happened that impacted their ability to have a credit line.

That would put most retailers out of business and I'm sure it'll eventually knock out Fry's.

Went to Fry’s electronics on Thunderbird in Phoenix, Az, and found a ghost town!!! Could not even find AA batteries...and I am not kidding. There were almost no staff to be found. This chain cannot last much longer!!!

I went to the Wilsonville Oregon location last week and it's dead in there. There are no motherboards or CPUs! Can you believe that? Their back stock area does not have a single item. I would bet you a desktop that Frys won't be around in 2020. They are probably not receiving any stock against their will. Who knows, it's a private company. I've never seen anything quite like this.

With the holiday shopping season kicking off next week, if Fry's can't get any merchandise to sell, they are finished. There really is no reason for them to remain open any more. Unless they love wasting money.

I was in the Brokaw store a few days ago looking for a CD-ROM drive. People in computer department told me they hadn't had any for 2-3 months and management wasn't telling them anything. I can only conclude one of two things. Management is deliberately running out inventory in order to milk what's left before closing, and/or their credit with vendors has been canceled. Either way, I would be shocked if they continue to operate after this holiday season. Another red flag is that their black friday ad hasn't leaked - normally it would be out along with all the other stores whose ads are now live.

I don't know about closing, but they obviously have a low regard for the intelligence of their customers. Today they are having a sale on a "Generator and Power Station that uses no gasoline". Being curious to know what it was fueled by, I clicked on the ad. It's a rechargeable battery. All it generates is a charge on your credit card. Item No. 9479291

This is the biggest marketing ploy in history. True, Amazon has given many stores a run for their money, but how many people would just hang out for hours ( employees in the bare stores)
and do that for absolutely nothing? I'm willing to bet that they sign a disclosure statement when receiving their ' occupy space ' check.

It seems that Fry's off Brokaw (one of their main Corporate store?) still seems to be very well stocked... actually extremely stocked up... maybe I'll ask one of their employees what's going on.

Fry's is and will always be my favorite for anything... really... just anything and everything they'll have it at one of their locations. Price Matching is Fry's motto (or at least it should be) for always going above and beyond to make sure what you've purchased for that day is guaranteed the best price for that item for the entire month. I've checked plenty of times and they work their magic.

No more refurbished merchandise please.... may I purchase original ones instead of what refurbishments are never in...

I went to Fry's located in Fremont, Ca on Tuesday November 19 and was shocked to see the store was practically empty. I came in to get an audio connector, but the entire section was empty. I found 1 of 4 employees in the store and was told they were selling old merchandise to stock with new. Anothersaid I needed to call the corporate office and the last person finally told me that due to internet sales, yes they were closing.

I walked around through the San Diego store in the morning of November 20th. There were actually things on shelves?! Tough to say but the shelves seems at about 20% not counting the cases of water along the bottom of some of the shelves to help fill space IMHO. I'm thinking about building a new PC and was pleased to see that some computer parts are available thought limited. There were some computer cases, a couple motherboards, some memory, ... It is encouraging. I'd hate to build a computer via mail but I'll keep an eye on the store to see if the shelves fill more.

It's definitely, noticeably less than the full shelves I used to see but it's an encouraging step, especially since the big business season between now and Christmas are upon us.

We'll see...

Illinois location has been bare for a while. Asked a worker and got excuses. Said they'll be stocked by the Holidays. Doesn't look that way.
This week I tried Fry's.com for a replacement laptop hard drive. Every option was showing sold out at my local Fry's. Got one at BB instead. In stock and on sale.

Same thing in Tukwilla, WA. Once a mega Fry's. Bare empty shelves everywhere. Only 3 people whole store. Remarkably I found what I wanted A Mac mouse and Mac VGA adapter. I was told it was the tradewar with China. 25% tariffs you know. I say B.S. They could have raised prices 25% and nobody would have blinked an eye.

Fry's is done. I went in there looking to buy some electronic components. I figured I could buy for less online, but I needed it now. But they had absolutely nothing to sell.

They didn't even have anybody at the door to make sure nobody steals. But there was nothing to steal.

Let's see...Sales reps are clueless and being jerked around by management. No more excuses like Trump's tariffs are k–ling business. (If that is true, explain Microcenter, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart.) There are no fulltime employees now except for supervisors and managers. There are only a couple of cashiers now at the most in every store. 10 days before Thanksgiving and Black Friday and there is no merchandise in the stores. Yep, the handwriting is on the wall. Elvis has left the building. The fat lady is singing. It's over because it's over. Fry's is going down the drain. It's circling the toilet rim faster and faster every single day. Remember to turn off the lights on your way out. And don't let the door hit you in the a– as you are leaving.

The end of an era... I was in Sunnyvale back in 1985 I think for the Grand Opening weekend of their first store. I have a 4 digit Customer number from those days... Now, 34 years later, I went into the Phoenix store for some memory flash drives on a Promo Code. I guess they are using the promo codes to their email customers to target their inventory clearance process. The promo coded flash drives were the only ones they had left... the visit to the store was a requiem for me as I pondered whether this would be my last visit to an icon of my geek life...

The crowning touch that all but brought a tear to the eye of this 34 year customer was that, for the first time I can ever remember... they were out of my Island Snack Peach Rings. It was a tradition that every time I went there, I'd pick them out of the same place in the Checkout impulse shelves...

I am afraid they are yet another victim of the greater retail economic implosion that is a part of the organized implosion of the American Empire. Did they have peach rings in Ancient Rome???
