Thread regarding Fry's Electronics layoffs

Fry's has to close in 2019.

With the constant 20% off coupons, and bare shelves, Fry's has to be circling the drain. The number of computer and monitors has been decreased so much, that one can only wonder why. Their creditors must not be extending them credit. Maybe all of their sales now are purely a cash grab.

I really wish I was wrong about this, but the writing has to be on the walls.

Visited my Las Vegas store and knew there was something wrong when I saw the parking lot 98% emply and this was Saturday morning!!! Shelves emply, you could count how may customers were there. No one to help you if you did find what you were shopping for. 1 cashier, café emply. Was told by store manger their vendors were now dealing with Amazon. He didn't care what would happen to his job since he was retiring in 8 months. So sad to see this happen. They had a great run. RIP.

Was at San Diego store today and was shocked how empty the parking lot was. There were just a few people in the store. Most shelves were empty. Just a few laptops laying around. This store is dying. Only 2 cashier stations were open. There was nobody that checked your bag when leaving the store. Sad. Goodbye Frys.

I was just in there in the Houston Fry's Electronics store looking for a switch. Nothing walked around for about 20 more minutes and employees tried to convince me that they are not going out of business. If they are not they are never going to recover my business or many other consumers business with the way they're handling things. They're feeding the employees lines of c-ap, stating oh no we're not going out of business. I just said you better start looking for a job because it's going to happen

You ALL know you still want to shop at frys that’s why you keep showing up, and say “Oh guitar center carries this but I came here first. Why????? We have the best piece . Others as-well , oh Best Buy can’t beat your price it’s so dang good . It’s obvious we are the first choice in your mind . So stop with the negativity and admit it. You still shop at frys and you want the company to prosper.

All 4 Fry's locations in Texas near me in the Dallas/Fort Worth area are absolutely vacant now. I used to go there to check out computer components, motherboards, memory, cases, etc...

but now...the old section for motherboards is stacked floor to ceiling with cases of bottled water. The new section for motherboards has four motherboards on the should. FOUR!!! absolutely ZERO video cards, only 12 PC monitors on display, all display areas nearly empty, yet at the front of the store it looks like a damn flea market...cheap c-ap you would expect to see in a dollar store.

I asked one of the few employees I managed to find on staff the last time I went when they were getting any new merchandise because the store has looked like it had for months...he said, and I quote: "We have no idea. Management isn't telling us anything, and they have the staff down to a bare skeleton crew at this point." I then tracked down a manager and point-blank asked him when the store was closing just to see if he would admit to it...and his reply was "All Texas stores are going to close within the next 8 months, if not sooner."

So if all of Fry's locations in the Dallas area are clsing...I would fully expect others to close, if not the entire company. They've been on a downhill slide for a long time now.

Actually Fry's stores Sqft, are too big, They have too much room for merchandise... all I need is components, accessories....and they dont need all that Sqft. for it. Not many stuff available right now but i got my 2 coaxial cables from Fry's last weekend for a fraction of the price elsewhere... As long they have good pricing on components ....I'm good! Fry's is the only way I can be profitable in my business and I hope the owners keep serving small business like me. I don't understand people posting rumors...are they haters...competitors...fired employees? c'mon...we need their business, bring it on Fry's!

Fry's is adopting the same business model as Staples and Office Depot, Better late than never! I run two small computer repair shops and I need Fry's for a quick pick up in the store as they have vendors hardware and components not available on staples. The sales rep said that they are preparing the stores to receive tons of new consignment products from various vendors....looking forward for it, I just need my source of componentes back ASAP!

"sell on consignment instead of buying it outright" LOL considering it took them more than a year to actually get around to paying for the stock they purchased from some vendors and at the same time kept replenishing stock which must have sold since they kept buying, you could say that their vendors were always on consignment. It's not like they actually paid for anything on time anyway.

Illinois store is in the same state - no new stock in months, most aisles nearly completely empty other than items that they probably had boatloads of in the stockroom, so you have an i aisle with a jillion identical usb cables for example.

They have employees, and they all go through the motions, this doesn’t seem like your usual liquidation, since those go fast and are heavily obviously aren’t even consolidating stock from multiple stores, they’re just not buying anything to sell.

I read one theory had a massive fraud situation in inventory management and they needed to rebuild the entire organization from scratch, and apparently are also intending to sell on consignment instead of buying it outright. Those stories are consistent with the idea of dwindling the stock to nothing (if you’ve got no trained buyers yet or are in heavy renegotiation with suppliers), but how long can you even keep the lights on like this? I’m skeptical but hopeful. At least I have micro center to fall back on.

FRY'S BIGGEST PROBLEM FROM DAY ONE....

UPPER MANAGEMENT= S—ED + CLUELESS + DADY'S MONEY
MIDDLE MANAGEMENT= S—ED + DUMB + BLIND
STORE MANAGEMENT= PUPPETS + IGNORANT
STORE ASSOCIATES= ROBOTS + VICTIMS

RESULT:
UPPER MANAGEMENT= GOLDEN PARACHUTE
MIDDLE MANAGEMENT= SEVERANCE
STORE MANAGEMENT= PINK SLIP
STORE ASSOCIATES= ROBOTS + VICTIMS AGAIN

SIMPLEST WAY TO WRITE FRY'S HISTORY.

Well, I say it’s Fry’s management. I’d order things for store pickup, be told it’s ready, get to store and it’s not ready, and in some cases be told they’re out. People don’t know where stuff is, I can’t tell you how many times I’d be directed back and forth across the store by staff trying to find something, and often ending up in a dept I was in before where the staff didn’t even know it was there. Web site s—s, search doesn’t work well, neither does sorting or filtering. Went to Duluth Ga store on 11/9. First visit since the first of the year and I was shocked. Before I got in to see what it was like, I commented about how dark it was, lights were pretty dim. Same thing others describe, bare shelves, very little staff, warehouse area bare, cafe closed. I asked a worker if they were closing, he said it’s on and off. They’re closing, not closing, closing, but right now not closing. Signs say they’re hiring, but they have a long ways to go if they are going to have a decent holiday season. The last two Black Fridays haven’t been the same, few good sales. Last year I was in and out in about 30 minutes, absolutely unheard of in previous years since you’d have to spend at least 30 minutes in checkout line.

San Diego visit over the weekend: Network Cards? Yea, we got one from "HiRo" RAM: Nothing current, just old returns. CPUS: Nope. Motherboards? One model, none on display. Power Supplies? Nope. Hard Drives? Nope. SSDs? Nope. 2' Ethernet Cables? Yea, about 20 in a bin. Component level parts (resistors, caps, diodes) Nope.

bluetooth headsets: total of ten on the racks.
toner: none
paper: a few boxes of basic copy paper only, no quality stuff
perfume and similar items: display cases full, all at 80% off
candy and cheap c-ap: all over the checkout line

Truly a sad sight. And i'm one who still misses Quement (san Jose), WeirdStuff (sunnyvale) and gasp (radio shack).

Frys is not the only store going out of business in 2020. Political leaders will go out of business too, corrupt business men will be found out , and false religious leaders will get caught , it’s all going to end . Amazon will eventually perish with all the expired food they sell , k–ling people making millions .They are all great entrepreneurs that will go out of business. Good luck

When is the grand Reopening! They had a bunch of GoPro 8s and nothing else in the Renton Wa store.

Overhead is going to shut them down quick enough if they don’t start selling ASAP. I think everyone higher up at frys is playing musical chairs and headed for the caymans with as much cash as the can stuff in a suitcase. Poor gullible employees good luck cashing that last check lol.

The target next door was bumping and had product so the trump tariff line doesn’t work.

Went to the Fry's in Roseville, CA today.
Empty parking lot, bare shelves, and dejected employees (those few that were working).
Saw one of the "old guard" employees and joked about him being the last one out, turning off the lights.
Checkout guy swore they are getting new stock, but very slowly.
Hard to believe though, as there was almost nothing current or new on the shelves.
If they make it through 2020, I'll be both shocked and impressed.
RIP Fry's, you had a good run.

I own a computer shop and would make the trip to the LV Store at least once a week. Though there were a few good employees that cared, the majority were indifferent at best and normally just seemed like any questions were not welcomed. I started to compare their prices with Amazon and found Amazon to be competitive and many times even less expensive. Now instead of Fry's getting my business, my $20K/Mo. in parts business goes to Amazon and eBay.

It saddens me to hear that Fry's make close forever. I've been going to that store for over 25 years. like all the stores from the past no longer exists it breaks my heart and saddens me to know one of my favorite stores will be gone and I really don't think there's too many left. I cry when Toys R Us erase all my grandkids some clothes to toys and even toys for myseft. Our store from the pass is dying so many stores it's just like losing a best friend. Most of my Electronics and stuff came from Fry's. I don't care for Best Buy there too high. Walmart's is okay but it's not like Fry's. I pray that something will happen that they don't go we don't need to lose frys we need Fry's. Fry's has everything that you need, very reasonable price, Mega sales and items of the day. I can't believe it, it hurts to lose other family store.

Tonight I went to Fry's in Burbank, CA to buy a Western Digital External Hard Drive. I got to the store and rack upon rack were empty. I'm going throughout the whole store and noticing that entire aisles are totally empty. I'm having trouble finding the External Hard Drives. Ask an employee, and he tells me the aisle. Empty aisle. Look around more. Find bins of cords once overflowing a year ago completely empty and think to myself, "wow if you were a component guy, you'd be screwed with that much out." Finally find a guy in the hard drive section and asked if they had the Western Digital Hard Drive. He said they didn't. Then I asked to see the External Hard Drives they did have. "We don't currently have any external hard drives in stock." "When will you?" "I don't know."

Okay, if you're a computer store and a customer goes in to buy an external hard drive, and you are stocking none, there is a big, big, big problem. You're not carrying an entire major product category in your store at the moment? I mean it is one thing to have scant store shelves, its another thing to be sold out and totally missing entire categories of products. The area that once held external hard drives is completely empty of everything such that it never appeared they ever carried them, when this is the store I usually buy my hard drives from.

I would have bought any discount larger external hard drive tonight. They're essentially a zombie store right now. I mean the stock at the store was already as bad as you encounter several weeks into a going out of business sale.

There is no way I can see that you can turn around half your store inventory

Had to drive down to Austin today. I live in Waco. I don’t get out there much. But I always stop Frys. They used to have all kinds of items. Today it was a sad empty store. As most of you have mentioned shelves we empty. Cafe closed at 3. I hated it. They didn’t have much selection. Tried to get some ram. None in stock. Thought I’d look at a sound bar. Didn’t see any. I hope they get it fixed whatever the issue. I’ll sure miss them if they close.

Don't blame Amazon, unless the reason you are blaming them is great options. Look at Best Buy and MicroCenter. They are both doing well, thank you very much.... in brick /mortar retail. Something's up with Fry's but seems more internal than external forces.

I used to work at Fry's Fountain Valley. Still have some friends there. I asked them what's going on. They all said they are not going out of business but "restructuring the way they do business." whatever that means. One of my buddies even said, "C'mon, do you think i'd hang around here if they were going out of business?"

So close to Black Friday too... If they miss out on Black Friday this year, I think they'll close down.

Just returned from Frys in Alpharetta Georgia 11/08. Not a single Frys branded battery on the shelf. No alarm system parts whatsoever and 85% of the shelves where empty. Sure looks as if they are going out of business.

I had heard that Fry's electronics was going out of business. I decided to stop in there this morning to look around see what kind of sales they had. I said I heard you guys going out of business and the guy said no we're just having problems with our vendor. As I walked away took a few steps they had a sign that said HIRING FOR THE HOLIDAYS. For someone who's not going out of business many of the shelves are empty. Ran into another customer who said they been that way for 6 months. I heard many others asked the associates if they were closing and they said no. Why can't they just be honest.

All self inflicted...

Eliminated positions that were once the core of the business. (Lost a lot of good leaders)
Burned bridges/relations with vendors and partners. (No products, no sales)
Cut staffing to the extreme with no clear game plan. (Lost even more good people)
Business is down significantly and there's no coming back from it.

What everyone else here said...

I was driving back to Reno from Olympia WA this past Monday on I-5; stopped at the Wilsonville (OR) store to get a few capacitors for a home project. Thought I was in Venezuela from all the empty shelves.

Same story today (11-6-2019) in both the Roseville and Sacramento CA stores. Component shelves that were emptier than the proverbial h–ker's Hope Chest. And sooooo close to Christmas?

Say what you want, this ain't looking too good, folks...

Went to the Fountain Valley, Ca store and entire inventory could almost fit in a small strip mall location. Was so sad, I needed a network switch and they did not have not one in stock. In the past they carried over 25 choices. This is almost as sad as Toys R Us, I hope they survive but I will be shocked.
