Thread regarding Fry's Electronics layoffs

Fry's has to close in 2019.

With the constant 20% off coupons, and bare shelves, Fry's has to be circling the drain. The number of computer and monitors has been decreased so much, that one can only wonder why. Their creditors must not be extending them credit. Maybe all of their sales now are purely a cash grab.

I really wish I was wrong about this, but the writing has to be on the walls.

Too close to the holidays for any company to not have items on shelves. Its a stupid ploy. They are going out of business.

I went to the Sunnyvale store today on the way elsewhere just to take one last look at where I used to spend hours.

The entire stock could fit, comfortably, in less than 1/10th of the store. Entire aisles with absolutely nothing on the shelves, some areas that look like they have some stock turn out to be one model (perhaps something that just doesn't sell?) spread across tens of feet of shelf space one level deep.

What little there is on the shelves is often in sections with incongruous signage - for example, garden stuff (trowels, kneeling pads, garden hose, etc) in a section with signage indicating it was networking components (maybe the logic is that these items could be used if you're burying network cables just a couple inches underground?).

They had long since removed many of the massive number of checkout stations that were once in this store (of course the only time I saw more than half in use was holiday shopping seasons shortly after the store opened). There was only one checker and I only saw one person buy anything.

The good news that I didn't have to say "no thanks" as I strode past the receipt checker – as there was none.

I recall eagerly getting a copy of the SJ Murky News from the newsstand every week to peruse the Fry's ad and often ended up heading to Mecca to get something that I didn't even know I needed until I saw it in the ad.

Both San Diego stores are a ghost town. Fry's was the only place I could go to get parts for a computer on the same day. Best Buy s—s for computer parts. Really sad.

Went to Fry's in Tempe, AZ for a PC power supply on 11/2/19, and it was empty! Needless to say, they had 0 power supplies in stock, and from the looks of it, nothing else either. Ended up at Best Buy. What a disappointing experience; I probably would've ended up buying a bunch of c-ap I didn't need along with the PS. Whatever their strategy is, it is flawed. I'll likely never waste my time again walking into another store for a part they're certain not to have. Isn't this like Business 101, customer acquisition costs and retention and all that? Hopefully they pull through, but doubt they will survive the hit they are taking from dissatisfied customers. Good luck, Fry's!

Went to Fry’s in Las Vegas and was surprised to see the shelf’s practically bare. Dim lights, very few employees around, and some of the employees sort of rude, empty parking lot. One employee said no deliveries in a couple of months. Sad

Went to Fry's in Austin, TX yesterday to buy a micro-SD card. Hadn't been in there in quite a while and was shocked to see so many empty shelves. Couldn't buy a memory card, as there were none in stock. Wandered around the store a bit and it sure looks like the local Safeway just before they closed. Came home and ordered the card I wanted from Newegg. Would sure hate to see them close, but we'll see what happens.

Fry's at Burbank, CA
Some empty shelves, and others sparsely populated only at eye-level.
Shelves near the rear of the store have literally been chopped in half, they cut the top half of all the shelving units down, you can see the Sawzall cuts in the shelf standards, you can now look over the shelves, before they were really tall. Lighting is poor, almost no employees and areas like the RAM/CPU area have no one buying product, that used to be the hot area of the store.
I don't think they can/will last much longer.

It's kind of sad, almost nowhere to go touch and feel electronics anymore.

just went to Fry's Tempe night before last...the only thing emptier than the shelves was the parking lot...talked to a dept manager he told me they have had a delivery in over 4 months. If they're "re-tooling" their business plan or waiting for "new vendors", who care's. He also told me the California stores were doing good, not what I read here. Probably waiting for the "right bid" on their "real estate". I understand they own most of the sites where their stores are. Sell it all, throw in the towel and retire on a tropical island Fry's brothers....you're days are long past

Fry's going under has nothing to do with tariffs! Don't believe this liberal fake news garbage.
If tariffs were in fact hurting everyone, then Amazon, Microcenter, Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, Costco... all places that sell electronics made in China, would be in the same situation as Fry's.

Why is it that ONLY Fry's is lacking inventory to sell? The fact is vendors do NOT trust Fry's. Fry's inventory manager stole millions from the company. Fry's has also been known to pay LATE to their vendors. Fry's is going down because of poor management. Not Chinese tariffs.

Just returned from Fry's in north Houston. About 50% of shelf space is bare. This is really sad; I'm thinking one main cause for this is on-line shopping.

Austin, TX is pretty cleaned out in the electronics and tools sections. Not sure about multimedia. It feels depressing. Customer loyalty is fickle at best, they won't recover from this. Waste your time driving to an empty store once and next time you'll just use Amazon.

Fry's located in Arlington Texas is a sad disgrace with 95% of computer and electronics gone. Several dozen empty aisles. I asked an associate about it's closing and they said they didn't know. There was maybe 6 cars in the parking lot when I went in to buy some DVD-Rs which they no longer carried and the associate said, "maybe try Amazon."

There's been a rumor for awhile that the personal bankruptcy of one of the Fry brothers has dragged the company into a situation that affected their credit line. That is supposedly one of the real reasons they haven't been able to acquire new product.

Given what I see not only at the Concord store but at every one I've been to here in the Bay, I must conclude that they are toast. Fremont, Sunnyvale, Las Vegas...all the same and everyone working there seems well coached to tell us the Great Pumpkin will soon return to save us all from Best Buy and Amazon. I wouldn't hold my breath.

We were hearing that line about new vendors two years ago when I worked there part time.
My wife and I were in there last weekend and the situation was far worse than six months ago.
They're done.

I wen to the store in San Jose CA on Brokaw and they are empty. The night of Oct28-2019 I went to the store in Sunnyvale CA on Arques Ave and this one looks so bad, nothing on the shelves. I asked one of the employees if they were closing the stores and she said "no, we are waiting for more inventory", I really doubt that is the case. I spent some time in these stores when I was putting my own computers together now I have to buy things online but I really like to see and check what I am buying.

Wow! Went into the South Houston TX location for the first time in a couple months. I should have realized something was up when there were 6 cars in the parking lot. Walking inside and seeing nothing in the huge middle aisle set the scene of despair. Fixtures and aisles of shelving were moved out, hardly any product left at all. No sales tags on anything, no snacks or candie. One 20 foot long, 5 shelved wall with single bottles of Gatorade lined up down it. These stores won't make it to Christmas. So sad! I remember going to first one in Houston with the NASA theme with my dad in the 90s. Wonder when the liquidation/closing signs will go up..

I'm gonna put in my 2 cents on the matter. but if I feel like if their losing I wanna add; that part of the reason their not improving because traffic to get in and out of the area. since its a big store their is a lot of revenue they need to go to... its a logistic and demographic issue. not only that... the idea that their are so many best buy's store is the accessibility, their are more best buy's than Fry's because of the size... if they really want to bounce back... I think giving the consumer more better options and benefits is a very good reason why they should be able to shop their.

the other thing too is that what best buy is doing right is the display area... I was watching a video on how best buy is still around because they have a mini store within a store like for apple products, for samsung to name a few. just to handle all of that... so that being said why can't fry's redesign the aisle just to create that sense of environment or change it enough so it can attract people. I mean most of it is right but I feel like its been a lot easier for them to do that.

I think advertisement needs to reach out more internet personalities or just sponsor more on the Esport scene or some of the tech companies trying to get more people to get the word out. I feel like the lack of word of mouth isn't reaching them enough because of how amazon and best buy aren't reaching them out. so that would be a good idea to get people on board.

I just want to offer any type of suggestions for this because it's breaking my heart to see something go and it wouldn't be right... not like this.

just reading this ! wanna see if we can get people involved because from the entertainment side of things. Fry's really opened my mind for creativity because I"m not stuck behind a finance option on a already built PC and more to the point. the hands on experience toward just getting the right parts just to make it right is just scary for me. because I'm scared that not being able to access parts on a psychical store unlike with amazon and with best buy not being resourceful. seeing stuff like this I really really think the gaming and the tech community should really push this out and speak up about this. I don't want this store gone.

Fry’s poor management, lack of customer engagement, and Amazon are the 3 major contributors to have led to their downfall.

In the past, the only thing that kept this company competitive was low prices. Now that Amazon has taken the cost leader thrown, there’s no place for Frys. Leadership failed to differentiate themselves and protect the brand.

Their merchandising has been abysmal over the years, and concern for the customer has ALWAYS been non-existent. There is zero loyalty a Fry’s shopper would give to keep them business.

This is a classic, know your business and adapt to market conditions, or die. They chose to die.

Oxnard, CA store employees keep saying "more stock will be in next week" which I have heard over the past 3 months. I knew fry's was have a problem when it started having gardening products for sale along side external memory components. Went by today, more empty shelves and even coffee shop was closed.

The new company line is "tariffs are causing the issue and we will be restocked within a few weeks." fry's won't be around in a few weeks.

Fry's Burbank have ZERO CPUs. They only have 2 motherboards, one Rasberry and one AMD board.

Fry's Grocery stores are also laying off many store middle managers. I have a feeling Fry's Electronics will close by the end of this month or the next.

Renton, WA store: I went there today and it was SAD! I estimate the remaining "inventory" can easily be combined to a floor area of ONE-QUARTER the whole store's "footprint".

There wasn't even a "receipt check" guy at the exit doors!

I really think this store is gonna Officially Close before this-coming New Years Eve. Looks like I'm gonna be buying "electronic parts, etc." from Newark or DigiKey and "computer" stuff from Tiger Direct (or similar) from now on...

I've been at the Phoenix store, 1 of 2 stores in AZ, few days ago hoping to see if they have a new stuff finally. I've been visiting that store for many years and had a great experience with shopping there. Ror the past few months I have been seeing less and less items on the shelves. Many months ago I asked a hard-to-find employee there if the store is closing. I was told no. Few days ago, I was told the Fry's is negotiating new contracts with vendors.

It is very sad to not being able to buy items right away when needed, and instead waiting for them few days to arrive after shopping online.

Went into Fry's Sunnyvale store today. Hardly any stock on the shelves. No sales staff. Its such a shame cos I used to shop there all the time and there was a cute girl who worked there I used to see every time I went there. This is a symptom of the polarisation of wealth in the US cos as Bezos gets richer, all the entry level workers at Frys lose their jobs.

I was at Fremont today, I was shocked and sad to see a mostly deserted store. I knew something was up when there's only 10 cars or so in the parking lot. The empty shelves and bare hooks with no stock was disappointing. I've seen this at stores going out of business. Its a shame. I first came here in my 20's and now in mid 60's. I remember driving to the old Fremont store (near mission) after work and searched the tech wonderland for something, anything since I drove from Oakland. My job took me all over the west and I visited local Frys everywhere. I most remember each store having a unique theme with Burbank having the alien and soldiers at the entrance. I shopped recently Fry's online and if I had not come here I would think everything is fine. Good Bye old friend.

Went to the Concord, CA store on 10/19. The one that's on Fry's Way because there was once a giant Fry's grocery at (okay, next to) the location. Like everyone else I was astounded to find it an empty shell of once glorious self. Only one clerk at a check out counter that has sixteen registers and she was playing a game on her phone waiting for one of the three customers to make a purchase. There were no motherboard, memory, cases, monitors or printers. It was bad enough that I expected to see prices on the display stands, for the empty display stands themselves but did not.

It so sad. I remember once waiting in line to buy an original HP Laserjet at the old Warm Springs store where tour buses of Asian tourists would pull up and unload several times a day.

Visited the City of Industry, CA location today, and thought it odd by how few cars were in the parking lot at noon. As I walked the isles, like others have mentioned, I noticed that there were many empty shelves. Also noticed the racks in the back where extra stock is kept, were all empty. I even ask one of the employees if they were doing inventory or closing, to which he laughed and said ‘oh no, we’re not closing’. Found the whole experience so odd, that I googled as soon as I got home and found this thread. So sad to see them go. This was like my toy store.

Wow! It's been quite a few months since I've been to Frys and I had no idea how much trouble they were in. I visited the Duluth GA store and immediately saw something was wrong. They no longer had any OLEDs on display. The Apple accessories were completely gone along with WiFi routers. Only saw 3 employees walking around with their heads down. I don't see how they'll even make it to the end of the year. Sad to see...
