Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Backup everything just in case...

I don't work at Oracle but this is a general advice, I would recommend everyone to back up everything they think are useful for their next job just in case. Source code, scripts ...etc. If you use company's laptop or phone then remove all personal information from it.

I guess if you're going to take anything, be sure to delete it from your laptop before you leave!

When we got aquired and riffed we formatted and wrote over and formatted all our drives while waiting for our exit interviews.

Great idea, thought of doing that, wish I had.

Definitely remove personal information from any oracle device you return!

It's amazing that this got voted up. Does that mean that people are voting for copying oracle source code? This post is a bit weird.

Unfortunately, your manager is often NOT on the side of their employees.

Obviously, don't collect Oracle source code. I'm not sure what the OP is suggesting to people.

Also, in my case, my manager had me make a backup of a lot of source code, which I left on my laptop.

He said to do that just in case, in case of what? In case I have to leave suddenly, he wanted to make it look like I was stealing source code? Guy was pure evil.

Delete anything from your laptop that you think could look suspicious. I am sure there are some good managers at Oracle, but I worked with some sleazy piles of evil sh--. They are still there, screwing over other people, I'm sure.

Stupid and dangerous advice. You run the risk of legal action by taking source code with you that could be considered proprietary, even if it isn't. I just deleted everything in my home directory, after checking in any files I was working on. And my email, but I didn't really have any personal email going to my work address anyway.

One weird thing that I read in my layoff documents was that I had to turn in my business cards. I didn't have to do that with any other company I worked for. Is that just an Oracle thing?

Stupid advice. They are in tech. What you worked on 2y ago, let's not even talk about 10y, is most likely deader than dead.

If you think what you accumulated on your laptop makes you a marketable employee, you deserve what you get.

It's what you got in your head.

Retaining copies of source code from Oracle to use in future jobs is very dangerous.

And no, that terrible Crashplan (which I have never seen anyone ever get it to work successfully) doesn't count. Use an external hard drive and keep multiple copies.

1fla,

Some wisdom there. Thanks.

I was hugely affected by yesterday's layoffs. I "survived" but my work life will never be the same, lost some good people.

Don't leave personal papers or info in your office. Have nothing at work you wouldn't mind leaving behind.

Maybe your axe will not fall. But it frees the mind about what your work relationship is.

Peace and strength.
