5G can be used on any frequency AWS,PCS ,700 etc, You only achieve the ultra high speeds with the millimeter wave antennas that are on telephone poles close to the customers device, The Speeds on the frequency's currently being used will only be slightly better than 4G. Verizon will phase out the 4G one frequency at a time and convert it to 5G just like they did with 3G

I thought small cell antennas were required for 5G. What is the TMobile/Sprint technology the article is talking about?

Actually the engineering data gathered was worth the investment! Writer did not account for that.
