If you are being laid off and the company offers you another position that comes with lower pay, what happens if you refuse it? Does it mean you are no longer eligible for severance?

You won’t be offered a lower paying job, but if they present you with the option and you refuse, you are still gone but no severance because they consider it a resignation.
HR won’t allow you taking a lower salary, and yes you would lose severance if you stayed
