Severance package

What is the severance package like for laid off employees to help them keep moving on with life?

Severance is paid because it’s cheaper to make a set settlement with everyone than having to get lawyers involved for everyone who would otherwise claim wrongful termination whether they have a case or not. (Even if they won all those cases it’s an expensive massive drain on time that could be spent making money instead.)

Severance is given to entice you to sign the "I won't sue Oracle" agreement. It is not done to help you " keep moving on with life".

Corporations don't do anything out of the kindness of their heart. Nor is HR is your friend. HR is there to protect the company, not the (current or former) employees.

Why is your employer responsible for helping you "move on in life"? They only owe you a paycheck for work performed, anything else is voluntary and they aren't legally obligated to give you anything. Remember, this is a corporation, not your mommy and daddy giving you an allowance.

To be fair, as much as I dislike Oracle, the severance was pretty generous in my case and help tremendously. Without it we would have had to burn through a big chunk of savings.
