I don't understand why everyone assumes people over 50 can't learn new technology. Nor do I understand why people think anyone under 30 can.
A little Grecian Formula will do the trick.
IBM is transforming to cloud. Like it or not, if you are old within IBM you are viewed as non-essential. HW is being abandoned at an expedited pace. Expect Storage to be gone by June. Scale out power soon there after. Outsourcing will follow, with TSS associated HW also going. IBM will keep Enterprise HW and a skeleton crew to operate it. Please note IBM already has to hire mainframe and enterprise power system temps to keep their cloud offerings running. How’s that for planning? Dump the heads and realize you can’t run your strategic hybrid cloud offerings. No worries LINUX and gen X will save you. IBM managers manage to how they get paid, not to what the company needs. Enjoy the blue washing
This is really IBM's loss... the old heads are the ones who have all the knowledge. Keep it up IBM, this will be your downfall.

This Age discrimination scam for older software engineers is real. It gets enforced in subtle ways. It is up or out culture at the end.
Age discrimination doesn't get the same coverage as gender, race or s-xual orientation discrimination.
I wish all companies also added age in the diversity reports, and if they did talk about why there are such a few percentage of older employees in engineering. If we wish to make engineering career to span several decades, we should all actively try to get o address this.
