Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Self Entitlement

From reading all the posts here, it sounds like people think Oracle owes you something. It's a two way street. You can discard Oracle at any time and the same goes for them. Instead of whining about it, why not take control of your life and create your own path instead of depending on Oracle. There are plenty of other companies out there. Be strong people and not let any corporation own you. You own yourself. You are the master of yourself. Not Oracle.

"when you are married and have children to care for then job security and stability are much more important."

But that would mean you should invest more in your abilities and with different companies -- not rely on one. You don't need stability and security from a company, those are things you need to create for yourself.

In finance, it's called diversifying. Instead, you put your eggs in one basket.

All of those thoughts are valid but completely unrealistic if you work for an employer like Oracle. They don't care and if you continue to invest your time in a company that has shown such bad behavior, then it's your fault for staying. Of course it's difficult to pack up and leave a comfortable life but the alternative is getting sh!t on by Oracle - and they will - maybe not this rif but there's always another one coming.

I do understand the sentiment that's being proposed here - however it's not quite so simple. Maybe if you're a 20-something, yes you can skip jobs every couple of years as you probably have very few commitments. You can take risks, you can start your own company, you can do contract work and so on. Later in life when you are married and have children to care for then job security and stability are much more important. You cannot take so many risks. This leaves you vulnerable to immoral practices.

At this stage things need to get pretty bad before you'll take the risk to leave and find something different that may be in a different location to where your home is and where your children are at school. You may endure very many years of zero increments and a gradual degrading of your working conditions over time. How bad does it have to get before you are 'forced' to leave because you cannot afford to work there any more ? ... or before your mental health starts to suffer. An employer/employee relationship should be based on a mutual respect. If you're giving 100% to your job and contributing to the success of your company, then your employer should not be constantly seeing you as a 'cost' that needs to be squeezed down. You are in fact a valuable asset. Remember also that in many countries working for the same company for a number of years gives you a small degree of protection in the law, so when moving jobs you loose this.

So what of self entitlement ? - If you are committed to your company then they should in return treat you with dignity and respect. That is all.

OP - I think people are doing that already.

It does not hurt to complain along the way, many an employee has been wronged by Oracle is so many ways...

It's easy to preach t o others, but when you are at the receiving end then your "G" goes "Phat".
