Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

Good point

I don’t know anybody who is laid off who thinks that they were lucky. However, if you are north of 60 nobody guarantees you any employment past 65 or 66 so look at this way; you had a nice long career, you worked in a company that used to be great, and you can collect social security and hopefully you have a pension from TR, and you no longer have to worry about being laid off. As far as work goes - look for a retail job.

Good advice from @YhfuJCA-vpn.

I was not being dismissive only realistic. If you are around 66 and think you can get another corporate job good luck. If you still want to work (understandable) and want to be around people you should look firvindufir industries that are senior citizen friendly. Look, they will probably get me (layoffs) soon too and that is what I will do. I will try to remind myself “It was a hell of a run”.

As the person you originally responded to with this dismissive "get a job in retail" post (I'm that original "north of 60" poster), yes, you're right--you did say "north of 60." But the fact is, people in their 50s are getting the same treatment, and they're not as decrepit, obsolete, and useless as a 61-year-old person. So them mentioning it is just as valid.

If you read what I wrote I said “if you are north of 60”,

I’m in my late 50s and was just pushed off to work for TCS working for TCS as an external employee. I’m losing sick days, vacation time, and paying more for medical care as of this change. And they even doubled the medical deductible betweeen making their offer and our starting day. I don’t see how this is going to save TR only unless the plan is for TCS to replace us with people they pay less. Then I get to lose all my benefits in an environment that might not even cover pre-existing conditions (which just about everyone my age is likely to have).

TR is big on supporting the community, but doesn’t do this in their own back yard. It’s a shame.

I think it is fair for you to say so if you are close to your retiring age. But I feel bad for people in their 50s assuming they have dedicated so much time of their life to this same company and getting laid off now. It is quite cruel in the job market, you have to deal with the job hunting process which is quite stressful. Mid-Senior level jobs are always more competitive then Entry level and you have to compete with people currently with a job or already being laid off.

Plus, a lot of jobs are either off shored or outsourced, companies are more willing to hire contractual positions instead of permanent to save $ on healthcare and retirement plans. Don't get me wrong here, I am not saying you can't and won't find jobs out there, but you probably won't find the same perk as TR and not as easy as people might think!
