Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

GM CUTTING NOT DONE YET, FOLKS!!!

Now GM is taking 8th level status away from those who are non-managing 8s. I know of three so far that had this happen. These are well respected people and widely recognized as the best in their areas. I firmly believe 8th level benefits (like the cars) need to be restructured, but the current structure isn’t the fault of those who earned the level. To strip these people of the level and effectively demote them and expect them to continue to contribute on the same level is simply rotten and humiliating.

As a side note, the ones I know of are older men. I wonder how many women lost their 8th levels?

It seems like no one has the cajones to file age discrimination OR gender discrimination lawsuits.

I have not heard of any female leaders losing their level...if this can be quantified it might be the basis of a gender discrimination class action suit.

Please continue cutting and most 8s do nothing except kissing the boss and attending the meeting every day. Mary well knows that.

Being demoted doesn't matter in the long run, if you have the right friends. From what I understand, if you hang out with the right people, it's possible to be demoted and still end up as a vice president.

I'd be shocked if level 8s actually submitted evaluations of their loaner cars.

Participation in the company car program is part of the job responsibility for those in the program. They are required to submit evaluations of the vehicle. That makes it not a perk, which would be taxable income. For the same reasons, the program would be a business expense and deductible for the company. Over the years, whenever the IRS would attempt to define the program as an employee perk, GM would change some details of the program to not meet that IRS definition.

Promoting the cars was also the reason behind the Ambassador program.

And where is that now?

BTW, why would GM get a tax deduction for giving Level 8's a free loaner car? It's a perk, not a required business expense.

GM's FREE car to 8th lvls and above is a big fat tax write-off for the company. Don't kid yourselves, GM not providing these cars because they are generous or being nice. Drivers of these cars are instructed to promote sales of the cars to family, friends, neighbors, etc. And remember, it is a requirement that anyone receiving the FREE car also own a GM vehicle that is less than 4 years old...while enrolled in the program. This means that over a 20 year career they'd buy 5 GM vehicles. And they also use this as an incentive to recruit new talent who might otherwise work for a 'good' company. GM's not stupid about these FREE cars. If they didn't make out on the program, they'd ditch it for all the reasons you guys mentioned.

If you are demoted, they do not want your as in the company, Do not worry how it looks. The clock is ticking. Wake up. These are not the good old days when you p,off some manager and they threatened you with a PIP.

The worst part of being demoted from 8 to 7 is that it shows on your HR records that you were demoted but without any context or explanation. So your career is stunted - even when times get better.

If Mary was serious about stopping cash burn, then company cars would have been gone long before any headcount cuts were made. Free gas, free insurance, free car (though it has had a small payment in the past)

@-onf What "lease" program are you talking about? You realize this is a GM thread and GM doesn't to employee leases, right?

That f’ng Car and Gas has to go. It is the GM Lotto ticket. How did it last the bankruptcy?

If Marry was serious about saving money she would take a substantial pay cut or better yet leave all together.

If Mary was serious about saving money, she would end the 8th level car program.

CEO enjoys paying taxes. She has so much doe that she is so high and into herself that she can do no wrong. Boy will she learn how fast change occurs. Make her day go out and buy a 40K GM vehicle and support this fine management and team.

Also, demoting any levels who like to run GM like a boy/girl club. GM needs a surgical operation to be survived.

Company car is a waste. But they get hit on team GM, too. That will go away.

8th level car is not a lease program, it is a much better than FCA or Ford equivalent

If just losing company lease car benefit that is no big deal. Unless you drive a lot of miles or are giving the car to teenagers to drive so you do not have high insurance. Otherwise less expensive to buy your own car. The company monthly lease payments have gotten quite high. We choose to buy our own for financial reasons.

In the past the salary remained the same. But then there were implications to future raises as you are then in the 4th quadrant which gets pittance for raises.

Let each manager cuts one/two their under favorites, and destroies boy & girl club culture entirely.

Besides demoting them from level 8 to level 7, are they cutting their pay?

I assume they're losing the company cars.

I dont think anyone should be getting a company car, not even Mary, unless they're doing a lot of driving for the company, like making deliveries.

Definitely a waste of money as a perk. Way more of a waste than the Ambassador program was.
