Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Question for those given Infosys or VSP offer (ie no option to stay with Verizon)

Wondering how many were within a couple years of having the points to be eligible for retiree insurance? Was this a strategic move to get the people weeded out of this benefit before they became old and sick? Question comes from 50 y/o with 20 yrs with company.

I left under the rule of 75 in 2015. The retiree “benefits” are ridiculous. Lowest tier of health insurance for a couple is $18K. ACA for a better plan is about $8K. The caveat with ACA is if you make over $61K, you lose the subsidy and are on the hook for an additional $1200/month retroactively. Even then, ACA is a better deal than VZ retiree health. If you switch your wireless provider you can get a way better deal than the 26% VZW discount. So don’t despair that you missed out on retiree benefits. There aren’t any.

If you are talking about an OWBPA report, that does not have employee names and service dates. It's a PDF that has affected titles within organizations (by owner name) broken down by age. It's also required information for layoffs. Service dates are considered private info and are not published anywhere except to you an HR.

@1jxb it was available on the VSP page. Not sure if that Infosys or ESP #s were ever published

I do feel some of this was age/tenure targeting. There were published spreadsheets with names and dates of service for all those who got the offer. My age plus years of service were 71.8..so I was VERY close to qualifying for retirement benefits. Even if not that great..still there was some benefit (cell phone plan - even if just 25%..etc)

@mjc Not true. There were people in my org who were way under 50. Not many, but if you look across the IT orgs that do the type of "managed services" work they rebadged, there aren't many youngsters in that pool, statistically speaking. So yes, more people over 50 might have been rebadged but it's only because that is the age group in those orgs. The only place I saw people moved without their job functions was around the issue of production support. InfoSys does not have their clean rooms in place yet, but you will see that change very soon. What functions do you see that were retained outside of production support?

All of the people that got Infosys rebadge in our group were 50 or older, and it was not based on job function. There are numerous examples of people that were transitioned to Infosys but their job functions were retained with Verizon employees. This is why they had to offer ESP. Verizon was going to hammered with lawsuits that they couldn't defend.

additionally, the retiree insurance isn't all that great, even with a subsidy. In most cases, it may not even be as good as ACA.

Correct. The proper term for the declines InfoSys is ESP - Enhanced Separation Plan, vs. VSP, Voluntary Separation Plan.

No idea what any of this has to do with wireline or wireless as IT in both was impacted.

I don't think age or service had anything to do with who was selected for rebadge. It all depended on the functions you perform and whether they could be outsourced.

VSP. This is not wireline only anymore.
