I started my new job mid-november, and benefits would not kick in until the first of the next month (december). because of this and a few other reasons, the company offered a signing bonus to help cover the cost of cobra. what i did not realize is that uncle sam would take quite a large chunk of this money. cobra costs $1800 per month. the company cut me a check for $2500, of which i actually received $1300 (after taxes, etc.) i am left to cover the remainder of the year out of my own pocket, which is about $2500. this seems like waaay too much to pay for insurance. granted, i was on the best plan possible at my previous position because we knew we would have a baby this year.
