Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Google just usurped IBM's Red Hat strategy

https://techcrunch.com/2019/04/09/googles-anthos-hybrid-cloud-platform-is-coming-to-aws-and-azure/

The whole idea behind the Red Hat acquisition was to create a software abstraction layer based on K8 that enables hybrid cloud and multi cloud deployment. Google (also struggling against Amazon and Microsoft in cloud) just said "great idea, we'll take it from here.

@2xsn containers are fast becoming old tech. We do serverless for all new app dev. Containers for legacy has been largely unsuccessful. This was a move to replace Ginni full stop. I just wish they didn’t need to sink 30B to oust her. We live in the US for Christ’s sake, she can get let go if the board grows a spine!

2xsn. I hope you are wrong, BUT having been associated with IBM for the past 3 decades, you are most likely correct.

NEVER underestimate IBM’s ineptitude The fine print of any deal tends to come back to bite IBM. Just look at the GF deal

Ginni sure looked like a deer in the headlights when she announced the Redhat deal. Go back and read or watch her announcement. Do you think she had a handle on all of the fine print, or was she just throwing a Hail Mary. There may be a method in her madness in that this is a way to clean house at IBM from their inwardly focused management, PLUS Ginni gets some pretty nice parting gifts

@Yujzp6P-2cgr I believe there is far more to the deal than we all know

What more could there possibly be? That IBM gets thousands of engineers? Already have them and it wouldn't cost $34B to hire more. That IBM can sell IBM products to RH customers and vice versa? The Venn diagram is basically two concentric circles already.

No, this deal was about a CoreOS->rkt->OpenShift->Ansible stack that allows enterprises to deploy containerized applications anywhere - on prem, multiple public clouds, any combination of the above - quickly and easily (lol). Google literally just announced they're doing the same exact thing. Since K8s is the centerpiece of this, and it was originally developed by Google, they're much better positioned than IBM. Of course, tech changes quickly and just as containers have replaced VMs as the "new hot thing" something else could come along tomorrow and render the whole strategy moot.

1kqg. I agree the Anthos tools are quite impressive as they relate to Redhat, BUT there really is a question that needs to be asked. Why was Google the number 2 bidder for Redhat. Redhat shopped themselves around, and Google bid 165 per share. IBM was at 165, and rebid at 190 to win. Now if Anthos is that good, why would Google just 6 months before bid 28-29 billion. I believe there is far more to the deal than we all know

Google should just IBM if they really want to play in the Enterprise. Hard to believe they have not pulled the trigger yet... then they can just clean up the IBM.

GBS/GTS is probably going to be sold now for sure. Things just keep getting worse for IBM.

I don't see any other way out of this spot.

Not that the advantage of buying Red Hat made any sense previously, but part of today's Google announcement was to make the Anthos tools (rebranded version of Cloud Services Platform) available on AWS and Azure, that basically decimated any reason for buying Red Hat. It will be a $34B acquisition for nothing, typical IBM track record.

Funny how IBM actually thought they were players in cloud.

Hybrid cloud with RedHat? Blah blah blah blah BS

Embarrassing

Google net cash 119 billion as of January. IBM not so much maybe even net negative cash?

Google can outspend and move faster .. this was in the works for a while it is not a reaction to IBM but it does validate the model. Interesting that google does not list IBM cloud as a hosting option .. not worth their time.

... and then also HPE and Nutanix entered into an agreement to collaborate closely.

There is no doubt that Google has to do something if they want to grab some of the Enterprise market. Thus far they are not even

competing in that space... aside may be e-mail...

Google made 3 announcements today.

  1. They partnered with HPE on Hybrid cloud

  2. They partnered with Intel on Hybrid cloud

  3. They announced they were going to hire hundreds of reps to capture share
