Thread regarding Ford layoffs

The big gamble

I see this situation with reducing the workforce and panicaly trying to catch the train of innovation and move into the market of new technologies ( Electric, AV) as a risky bet, and the odds are not in Ford’s favour. At least we were productive, had the potential and the resources to build cars that produces profit. Now they are baaing the future of a company with such tradition on the success of a technological trend. If it wasn’t so sad, It would have been funny.

Why don't we just use some of the free Telsa technology Musk released to the world as a starter and try poaching some employees from other companies to improve on it? Telsa would be a place you might be able to hire employees away as I've heard they work insane hours with insane random BS to deal with. I'm sure there is good reason why not but I'm curious to the answer.

Cause I'm sure everyone would want to come work here. I mean we have dogs and beer in FBP3! and the constant looming feeling of getting fired and impending doom, I mean what top talent wouldn't want to come here???

It’s more risky to stick with old tech vehicles, and get passed by. 100+ years ago, it was risky to invest in autos, since horses worked just fine.

I think that we have no choice but to try to do something to keep up with the direction the industry is headed. People just simply aren't going to be buying as many cars as they used to going into the future. If we did nothing but keep building cars, we would have no choice but to become a smaller company in the future as sales drop.

What we're doing is a gamble, but I don't think we have a choice. The industry is shifting underneath us. The real question is whether or not we're doing the right thing, and I really don't know the answer to that, aside from the fact that over the last few years it feels like we've been doing pretty much nothing except talking about what we're going to do, and that's not getting us anywhere.
