I applied for and got a promotion to a different department earlier this year (officer level, but not executive). When the recruiter presented the offer, I was told that EC had decided that going forward for officers, raises (even for promotions) would only happen 1x per year (previously it had been quarterly), no exceptions.

I can confirm that the no raise after one year on the job is false.

For certain grades the raise is effective on the first of the following month while for executive level roles raises are effective on the first of the next quarter. Naturally promotions at the senior level happens at the start of a quarter.

I disagree that it is standard practice to have to work in a job a full year before you get the increase. I've worked at many companies both in financial services and not. This was the first time I'd ever heard of Internal promotions increases only being processed 1x per year. And, even here it isn't that you have to do a job a full year before you get the increase - more accurately, it's that no matter when you get the promotion, your increase doesn't happen till July. Bid on and get a promotion in August? Oh well, wait till next July. Bid on a d get a promotion in April? It's not that long of a wait. Other FIs tend to processes increases quarterly, or at worst 2x per year.

It's standard practice lrp. Internal employees are not given minimum pay of the job grade until they are in the position for an entire year.

An employee who is a job grade J making a salary of 67,000 applies for and gets the job in a different business line that is a job grade K. Let's say the minimum salary of a job grade K is 72,000. That person will need to do the job for an entire year only being paid 67000. After one year, they will then be brought up to the minimum and start being paid 72000. Meanwhile, an external candidate walks in making 72000 on day 1.

J-L grade VP

M grade Director

S grade Managing Director

I would take hrz’s post with a grain of salt. It’s dependent upon your current pay and the pay range for the next pay grade. If you make way more than the minimum of the next grade and the job scope of the new role then that is possible, but not a regular occurrence.

You don't get the pay increase that comes with the job grade for a one year period when you change jobs to advance in the company. Do the job a full year before you get the pay that is advertised for the job. That's how it works at BNY Mellon for VP and above.
